Animal Profile

Oreo Pound Cake

Hello, my name is Oreo Pound Cake. My animal id is #222175. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - barks too much.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Oreo Pound Cake is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Oreo Pound Cake has shown mixed behavioral responses to handlers, generally displaying signs of anxiety, high arousal, and distractibility, especially in or around his kennel. While he is often easily leashed and willing to explore, he frequently exhibits heavy panting, a flushed face, and dilated pupils—indicators of stress. His interactions range from being hesitant and fearful, particularly with collaring and unfamiliar stimuli, to moments of engagement with enrichment, treats, and brief physical contact when approached calmly. During an interaction with a potential adopter, Oreo began hard barking and growling at an unfamiliar staff member and needed assistance removing him. During the interaction, Oreo alternated between engaging with toys and accepting treats, but then growled at the adopter and snapped at the unfamiliar staff member after jumping on them. He has responded well to high-value treats like chicken jerky and spray cheese, and has demonstrated capacity for playful, bouncy behavior when relaxed. Medically, Oreo Pound Cake is apparently healthy.

Oreo was described him as a social and affectionate dog with his previous family. He enjoyed lounging in the living room and preferred to sleep in his crate at night. Oreo is reported to love playing with bottles/balls/socks, eating apples, going for car rides, and had access to a yard. He is reported to avoid strangers actively, have separation anxiety (barking nonstop with destructive tendencies), and lack basic manners. During his stay in care, Oreo Pound Cake has been somewhat social with select handlers and staff, enjoying treats, enrichment games and puzzles, and playing with toys. But he has also escalated, becoming defensive (growling, snapping) with unfamiliar staff in and out of the kennel and during an interaction with a potential adopter. Due to the concerns reported in the previous home and during his stay in the care center, we recommend that Oreo Pound Cake be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope rescue partner that can address his challenges with the help of a certified professional trainer who utilizes only positive reinforcement methods.

Out of concern for his stress levels, a handling assessment was not attempted. 3/28/25: A handling assessment could not be conducted due to Oreo's fearfulness. When handlers attempt to interact, Oreo becomes avoidant with a tense body. He flinches with any form of contact, including when leashing to remove from the kennel and attempts to collar him. Due to his discomfort, he is returned to his kennel.

Summary:: According to Oreo Pound Cake's previous owner(s), when on walks he will alert bark at other dogs, and he prefers contact on his own terms. Whether familiar or unfamiliar dogs, on and/or off leash, specifics are unknown. 04/02/25 A dog-to-dog interaction could not be conducted due to Oreo being tagged to move to iso for being under the weather. Oreo will be revisited at a later date.

Summary (6):: 5/4: An unfamiliar staff member initially attempted to leash Oreo Pound Cake for an adoption interaction using treats, but Oreo responded with hard staring and growling, prompting the handler to step away to seek assistance. Another staff member approached, offered Oreo a toy and treats, and was able to leash him and take him to the yard. During the interaction with a potential adopter (PA) and two family members, Oreo approached the PA, accepted brief petting, but began to low growl. He was redirected with treats, engaging in play, and responding to cues. Oreo also displayed tension when the PA picked up a toy, and later escalated by jumping and snapping at a handler’s chest. Oreo quickly relaxed afterward and was removed from the pen to avoid further stress. He showed minimal interest in the family members and continued to approach the PA despite the PA remaining seated throughout. 04/24/25 (trainer note): Oreo Pound Cake was standing at the front of his kennel on his hind legs as handler approached. He was heavily panting, and his face was flushed and pupils dilated. His saliva was smeared on the doors of his kennel. He was easily leashed and walked to the behavior office with moderate pulling. On the way to the office, he stopped numerous times to scent mark. He was placed on a drag leash to freely explore. His frame was neutral, and he continued to heavily pant, have a flushed face, and scent mark around the room. His body loosened up and he wagged his tail when handler spoke to him in baby talk, however he did not approach or initiate any contact. He inconsistently engaged with enrichment items, as he is easily distracted. During the session, other staff members entered the room. Oreo Pound Cake approached to sniff them with a neutral frame and accepted treats from them. He was easily leashed and returned to kennel. 4/20/25: Oreo Pound Cake was leashed with ease and walked to the live room. Oreo engaged with a snuffle mat and puzzle bowl. Oreo was highly treat motivated (chicken jerky) and would offer a sit when handler reached into their treat pouch. Oreo would approach handler when seated and accepted brief pets. He was then brought to the BA room where handler sat on the couch and offered spray cheese. Handler placed the collar across their lap for Oreo to sniff and hand fed him pieces of chicken jerky while offering pets. He continued licking spray cheese as handler lay the collar across the back of his neck. Using a slow approach handler was able to collar him without issue. Oreo loosened up once free to move around on a drag leash. He found a toy which he played with independently with a bouncy frame. Oreo lay on the floor chewing his toy. He was switched back to the slip leash and returned to kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 4/15/25 (Trainer Note): ACS Staff report that Oreo Pound Cake is kennel fighting. Oreo Pound Cake is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body and moderate pant as the handler approaches. He begins to jump repeatedly on the door of the kennel, but is easily leashed. Handler uses a short leash to guide him out of the room and leads him to the canine training room. Oreo is frenetic with dilated pupils and clown face. He struggles to engage in the enrichment so handler plays the up/down game with him before moving him over to the mat. Oreo is able to sit and lay down on the mat, holding his position with reinforcement. He must be reinforced every few seconds or he breaks position. Oreo tentatively solicits contact and leans in with a slightly tense body, but allows the handler to pet him on his neck and chest. Another handler attempts to collar him using spray cheese, but Oreo tenses and closes his mouth. Handlers cease attempts and Oreo is relocated to a new kennel without issue. 04/08/25: Oreo Pound Cake is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He jumps up on the kennel door as it is cracked open but is easily redirected with tossed treats. Oreo PC is leashed and pulls mildly out to the play yard. He spends several minutes scenting and will become alert as dogs pass by, becoming square and watching them as they walk by. Handler uses directional leash pressure as they call to him to guide him away. Oreo PC will engage with handler as they toss treats. When exiting the yard, he notices another dog and will pull hard toward them, standing on hind legs. Handler ushers him forward and he settles once dog is out of sight. Oreo PC is walked back to the building, attempting to jump up at neighboring kennels and is returned to kennel safely. 03/28/25: Oreo Pound Cake greets the handler with a neutral frame but shortly after displays fearfulness, avoiding the leash going over his head and moving to the middle of his kennel. The handler slowly places the lead on the back of his neck, then drops it down to go over his head. He immediately walks out of his kennel, displaying hackles down his back. Once in the assessment room, handlers offer Oreo spray cheese, but he shows no interest. However, when offered ham and cheese slices, he takes them right away. When the handler adjusts the leash will Oreo side-eye them. He will demonstrates a stiff frame when more cheese is offered, he sniffs it but then walks away. Due to his discomfort, Oreo’s assessment remains incomplete. He is brought back to his kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Oreo Pound Cake is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior/Seperation Anxiety: Oreo pound cake is reported to become anxious when left alone in the home and will bark constantly along with destructive tendencies. His previous owner did not detail as to how these behaviors manifest other than the barking, so it is unknown if these behaviors may translate in a new home environment. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and are prepared to manage and positively modify them should they arise in the home. Please see handout on destructive behavior and separation anxiety. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Oreo pound cake is reported to jump up non-stop in his previous home. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During the handling assessment, Oreo Pound Cake displayed mouthy behavior on handler hand. Handling/touch sensitivity: Oreo pound cake is reported to bark and growl one held slash restrained. Please see handout on handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Oreo pound cake is reported to bark and actively avoid strangers in his previous home. In care, he has been fearful and avoidant of interaction with staff. Please see handout on fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Strength/leash pulling: Oreo Pound Cake is reported to pull hard on walks. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
