Medically, Yami Asta is apparently healthy. Yami Asta was surrendered by his previous owner due to housing issues. His previous family described him as a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog who can be vocal and prefers contact on his own terms. Yami is reproted ot pend most of his time either where his people were, the living room, or in his crate. During his stay in care, Yami has not acclimated well. He can be reluctant to walk and has pancaked. He will press himself against the wall while taking a few steps in short bursts. He has shown social behaviors with select handlers in calmer settings, but he appears highly anxious - panting heavily, pacing, unable to settle/focus - and can intermittently be reluctant to walk. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Yami be placed with a New Hope partner who can give him the time and space to decompress and acclimate at his pace.

Upon intake, Yami Asta was nervous in the waiting room and stayed sitting next to the family member. Yami Asta allowed staff to leash him and walked out of the room with the owner after verbal encouragement. Once out of the room, Yami Asta proceeded to plant and scramble to be next to the wall. He only took a few steps with encouragement from the family members. Staff members had to lift Yami Asta to bring to medical, which he allowed. After being placed back down in medical, Yami Asta walked with staff back to his kennel with some stopping. He was able to be placed in kennel without issue.

Basic Information:: Yami Asta is an almost 2-year-old LMB dog who was surrendered to ACC due to the owner's housing situation.

How is this dog around strangers?: Yami Asta is friendly, outgoing, playful, tolerant, and jumps in a social manner.

How is this dog around children?: Yami Asta is friendly, outgoing, playful, tolerant, and jumps in a social manner. He has spent time with many children including ages 4- 11.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Yami Asta is friendly, outgoing, playful, tolerant, and jumps in a social manner.

Other Notes:: Yami Asta is reported to be unbothered when held/restrained, disturbed while sleeping, startled, pushed/pulled off furniture, and collar grabbed. He is fearful when paws are touched. Yami Asta is known to get excited on walks when passing children, dogs, cats, bikes, and strangers. He will try to jump on them in a social manner. Yami Asta is known to be fearful of loud noises, pull hard on walks, and have anxiety.

For a New Family to Know: Yami Asts is described as social, affectionate, very active, playful, vocal, and independent. He spends most time where people are, bedroom, living room, and in his crate. He allows the owner to bathe and brush him. Yami Asta will not allow nail trimming. He will pull hard on walks. Yami Asta would go on 3-4 30min walks a day. He is crate trained. He loves going for rides in the car. The previous owner's favorite thing about Yami is that he play fights with his brother with breaks, and will snuggle. Yami Asta loves treats, bouncey toys, and chew toys.

Summary:: Yami Asta has not acclimated well to the shetler enviornment. He has been reluctant to leave his kennel and walk. Yami will army crawl in short bouts, pressing hisemlf against walls in the hallways. Due to his fearfulness and reluctance to walk, a handling assessment is not conducted.

Summary:: Yami arrived as an owner surrender with another dog and is noted to be friendly, outgoing, playful, tolerant, and jumps in a social manner with the other dog. 9/16/26: Yami greets another novel female dog through a barrier with his sibling. Yami is loose bodied, sniffing at the gate and tail wagging and offers a play bow, but his siblings hard barks, muzzle punches the gate and begins to continue to bark as he is pulled away. Yami and the female dog now are greeting and meet on leash face to face. Yami and the female dog are exuberant, greeting briefly before immediately jumping into play and vocalizing while on leash. Due to the frustration of both dogs the leashes are dropped and they begin to start playing with body contact, rolling over and Yami will mount the females face and she will tolerate it, moving away and reengaging. Both dogs are separated due to an outside shelter drill.

Summary (6):: 09/24/26 (PG):Yami Astra is at the back of his kennel as the handler approaches. he becomes loose and wiggly as they open the kennel door. Yami Astra is easily leashed and exits his kennel. Yam will hug the walls as they walk down the corridor and will stop behind a cart. The handler crouches down, baby talks Yami and begins to move the cart. Yami will walk behind it and is coaxed into the elevator. Yami will accept pets in the elevator and will sniff the perimeter of it. Yami is brought to the yard for play group. Yami meets a male and female dog and will play and repeatedly attempt to hump the male (See D2D for more information). After playgroup is finished, Yami will walk back towards his kennel room, stopping at the room entrance. A second handler holds the door open and they try to coax Yam through. Yami will eventually walk into the room and can not be guided towards the wall, instead he will push himself up against the kennels as he is quickly guided to his kennel. 9/22 (PM): Yami Asta is on his kuranda bed when a handler approaches the kennel. He comes forward when the handler calls to him, allowing his collar to be clipped. Yami continues to hug the walls as he leaves the kennel room and in the hallways. He pancakes after a few feet after leaving the room, refusing to move. The handler goes back and forth in the hallway twice in attempt to reset. But Yami continues to refuse to move even with coaxing and multiple breaks. Once the handler is able to coax him to the elevator, he finally exits the building and goes for his evening walk. Yami does chuff at a stranger that turns the corner quickly and startles him. He does not react further. He walks down the ramp on his own accord before planting in front of the closest double door, refusing to move. The hadnler opens the door, and he goes down the first three steps on his own before he plants again. The handler then has to go back out towards the back of the building to get on the elevator. Once in the hallway, Yami hugs the walls back to his kennel room. He plants once more near the door to the room, needing some directional leash pressure to get him moving into the room and into his kennel. Yami walks into his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 09/21/26 (PG): Yami Asta is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed easily. When walking through the halls, Yami Asta clings to the walls. The handler has to ask someone to turn off a loud fan, because Yami Asta pancakes and will not move past it. Once outside, Yami Asta pulls towards the yard. After his interaction, he returns to the building, still clinging to the walls. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 9/18/26: Yami Asta is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed and clip to his harness with ease and is then taken to the yard outside. Along the way, in the building he would constantly pull towards the walls while having a tense body as he walks low to the ground. He would baulk and refuse to continue walking when the handler walks away from a wall before entering the elevator. He then pulls hard to the yard. In the yard, he would run around with a loose body and would jump up on the handler. He is comfortable receiving treats and liked to jump up in the air to catch the treats when the handler tosses them. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and would constantly walk very close to the walls with a tense body while still walking low to the ground. He is then quickly placed back in his kennel with no issue. 9/8: Yami Asta is leashed from his kennel and taken out with his sibling to help encourage him to walk due to his balking and refusing to move. He follows his sibling out of the room but then plants once out in the hallway. With coaxing, he hugs the wall and will pancake intermittently, needing handlers to continue to coax him and walk his sibling back over to encourage him to walk. It takes several minutes and breaks before handlers are able to get both dogs outside due to Yami's reluctance. They are taken to the play yard, and he solicits play from his sibling before immediately mounting them due to his increasing anxiety. Yami spends the majority of the session persistently mounting his sibling, needing ot be walked away from handlers to give his sibling a break. He displays the same aforementioned behaviors when being walked back to his kennel.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the behaviors displayed during his stay in care, we recommend that Yami Asta be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Yami Asta has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Yami's previous owner reported that he jumps up in a social manner. Similar behaviors have been displayed during his stay in care. Please see handout on resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: Yami Asta is reported to not allow nail trims, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching his paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas, as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward-based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Yami to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: Yami has been fearful at the care center and reluctant to walk. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. He has shown social behaviors in calmer settings when handlers allow him the time and space to approach and interact at his own pace. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Yami's choice to approach a new person or thing. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Yami Asta appears highly anxious at the care center, panting heavily, pacing, and is unable to settle or focus. His owner described him as an anxious dog, but did not give details on how the anxiety manifested. If he displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement and force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: Yami Asta is a large dog that pulls hard on the leash during walks. We recommend for him to be walked on a front-clip harness or be desensitized to a head halter.
