Shady
Hello, my name is Shady. My animal id is #214618. I am a desexed female fawn dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/14/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.
Shady is on the at risk list for medical reasons. Shady presented with suspected allergies and severe chronic changes to both ears which will likely require surgery. Shady would benefit being taken to a full service vet clinic for evaluation and determination of best treatment of these conditions. Behaviorally, Shady has allowed for all medical handling.

Since I'm a long stay pup, my adoption fee has been reduced! Visit me today to find out my favorite treats and how you can take me home! What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! A volunteer writes: If wiggling were an Olympic sport, Shady would be a multi-medalist. A silly, enthusiastic girl (particularly in the presence of treats), this is the second time she's found herself living in the shelter in the past year - but her spirits remain as bright as they can given her situation. She was initially found in November 2024 hanging out in a playground sandbox in poor shape and brought to the shelter, where she adopted just a few weeks later. Fast-forward a year, when she was surrendered this past October, through no fault of her own. This 4-year-old low-rider has become a quick volunteer favorite, trotting along and checking in periodically on walks, usually in the hopes of getting some snacks. Her recent guardians noted that she loved to spend time with the family in the living room and bedroom, and tolerates bathing and nail trims (because she knows the value of self-care). She lived with three children, but would do best going to a home without kids under 13. Due to reactivity to other dogs, she should also be the only pet. Shady is spayed and ready to go home today.

Detailed Summary of Conversation **Patient:** Shady **Date of Conversation:** 03/08/2026 **Conversation with:** Foster Parent **Subjective:** The foster parent called to report a recurrence of pruritus and new behavioral concerns with Shady, a 4-year-old spayed female dog who has been in their care for approximately three weeks. Shady has a history of ear infections and was seen shortly after arrival for severe scratching and scabs behind her ears. She was treated with an ear cleaning and a course of steroids, with the final dose administered yesterday. Since completing the steroid medication, the foster reports that Shady has resumed scratching her ears and licking her paws with significant intensity. A new lesion, described as a "boil," has also been observed on her ear. In addition to the skin issues, the foster has noted a significant change in Shady's urinary habits over the past week. After being reliably house-trained for the first two weeks, she has started urinating inside the house multiple times. The foster also describes signs of escalating anxiety, particularly separation anxiety. The dog reportedly becomes distressed when the foster leaves, follows them constantly, and seeks to be in physical contact at all times. The inappropriate urination and panicked behavior seem to be worse at night. The foster administered a previously prescribed dose of Trazodone yesterday, after which Shady urinated indoors three times and destructively tore apart a bathroom trash can, which is uncharacteristic behavior. The foster is concerned she may have ingested some tissue but no food items. Her appetite and bowel movements are reported as normal today. Shady is on a Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein diet (both wet and dry formulas) and is not receiving any other treats or food. **Plan:** The veterinarian recommended an in-person recheck examination to assess the ears, skin, and overall health. The foster will schedule an appointment for tomorrow. The veterinarian advised the foster to bring a fresh, free-catch urine sample to the appointment for analysis to investigate a potential urinary tract infection, while also noting that the recent steroid use can cause increased urination. No new medications will be prescribed today. However, the veterinarian noted that Gabapentin could be considered as an alternative to Trazodone for anxiety and to help with discomfort from her ears, as Shady may be experiencing a paradoxical reaction to the Trazodone. The plan for tomorrow's visit includes a full physical and otic examination, a urinalysis, and a discussion about adjusting her anxiety medication protocol. The foster was advised to monitor for any signs of gastrointestinal upset related to the trash ingestion.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Shady be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to her reported dog reactivity in the prior home, we recommend she be placed in the home as a single pet and no dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity/Fearful: Shady becomes uncomfortable when touched around her face and ears, likely due to underlying allergies. Training will focus on gentle desensitization to touch in these areas, using high-value treats and slow, positive interactions. Building trust and pairing touch with rewards will help reduce discomfort and prevent escalation of fear-based responses. Please see the handout on Handling/Touch Sensitivity/ Decompression period. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Shady displays on-leash reactivity, including lunging, barking, and growling at dogs and dogs in strollers. Training will involve counter-conditioning and desensitization to these triggers at a safe distance, reinforcing calm behavior, and using no-pull equipment to maintain control and reduce frustration during walks. Please see handout On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration. Anxiety- Shady began to display lip licking and a little nervous during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety.
