Animal Profile

Royale

Hello, my name is Royale . My animal id is #250436. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Royale is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Royale was returned to the shelter due to a bite incident in the home with resident dog. When the dogs were being separated Royale did bit the adopter which broke skin. Royale's previous owner stated that he would lunge at small animals while on leash. During his previous stay in care, Roayle was noted to be tense and trembling during intake and sought exit during his assessment. He was also reported to jump up and snap at handlers. Royale's previous adopter describes him as a couch potato that loves squeaky balls. Medically, Royale is underweight.

Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only, single pet home with no trips to the dog park. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A Volunteer Wrote: If you're looking for a little love in your life, don't consider Royale--this amazing dog is a LOT of love! The kisses start on my hands as I go to leash him, and then he ever so gently stands to lean in for a hug. He's affection on four legs (or two, when he's hugging), and just the happiest, gentlest boy who walks sweetly beside me, happy to be on an adventure. Volunteers shout out his gentleness and sweetness, and we are shouting it to the rooftops!

Date of assessment:: 6/17/2026

Summary:: Royale was returned to the shelter due to a bite incident in the home. When the owner returned home, Royale without warning lunged at the resident dog and pinned them to the ground. When the owner attempted to pull Royale off the resident dog, he spun around and bit the adopter on the left thigh and calf. These bites were a bite and release that resulted in one puncture wound and three small bruises. Due to the bite incident and the redirection risk Royale is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 4/3/26: Royale greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body, soft tail wag. He then walks around the pen, marking the perimeter.

Summary (5):: 6/17/26 (KSV): Royale is at the front of his kennel with wiggly body when handler approaches. He starts jumping on the kennel door and barking in demanding way. He follows handler's command "sit" and gently takes treat as a reward. He continues follows multiple commands as "down" and "paw". When handler comes closer Royale leans on the kennel bars looking at them. His body remains loose with wagging tail. After some time handler ends interaction and Royale starts barking in the kennel again while they were leaving the room. 06/14/26: Royale is at the front of his kennel with loose body when handler approaches. He starts jumping on the door when handler attempts to unlock the kennel. Handler uses a treat lure and is able to put the leash on and take Royale out of the room. He pulls hard in the hallways and attempts to sniff around pop-up crates. Once he gets in the yard, Royale immediately relieves himself and after continues following the handler. He was placed on the drag-line and after he starts sniffing a lot and discovering the pen. Royale gently takes treats and allows petting. He is actively engaging with handler and playing pattern games. Royale follows commands "sit", "down" and "wait" and gets rewarded with a treat. Royale doesn't react to other dogs in neighboring pens or people. His body remains loose and, when the handler calls him, he responses and shows wagging tail. He attempts to jump a lot on the handler exuberantly but is redirectable with treats. Royale sits next to the handler on the bench and leans on them asking for more pets. After some time handler is able to put slip lead on and walk Royale back inside. Handler is able to pre-clip the leash and, once in the room, Royale goes back into his kennel by his own with no further issues.

Summary (6):: 5/15/26: Royale was jumping at front of kennel putting his front paws on the kennel door. He was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. Royale pulled hard coming out of kennel and for most of walk continued to pull hard. While walking Royale was erratic in his direction and zig zagging. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/10/26: Reported via whiteboard that Royale pulls really hard and needs a harness 5/8/26: Royale was at front of kennel with a soft body. When kennel door was opened he started to vocalize and jump. Handler used a treat lure to leash him. Royale was taken for a street walk. During the walk he would pull hard and often cut in front of handler or bump against handler. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/4/26: Royale is reported to be highly social and solicit contact. 4/27/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that Royale pulls hard. 4/26/26: Royale is observed to whine and fixate on other dogs while in the yard. He will also pull towards them. 4/20/26: Royale is lying down quietly in his crate when the handler enters the room. He begins to bark repeatedly towards the handler. Handler opens the crate and Royale pushes his way out. Handler uses a squeaker to distract him so the leash can be placed over him. A few attempts are made and when the leash is placed over him it goes over his head and under his leg. Handler takes him out and brings him into the elevator. The leash slips down to around his waist when he shakes. He begins to thrash and tumble on the ground as the handler tries to grab the collar. A familiar handler approaches and he jumps up on them in a social manner. Handler is able to place another leash on him and he is taken out to the street for a walk. Royale pulls moderately on the street. He stops to sniff various spots around and relieve himself. When Royale observes a dog he stares towards the dog with a slightly tense body. He is easily called away. Royale will try to pull ahead and when the leash tension is applied he will quickly turn around and sit at the handler's feet. He takes treats gently and will walk with the handler back to the shelter. He pulls back to the shelter and is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 4/19/26: Royale is observed to bite and pull the crate cover into their crate. 4/19/26: It is reported that Royale began jumping up and snapping at the handler while on a walk and while in the room where his crate is. 4/15/26: Royale is wagging his tail with a loose body in kennel. He paws at the leash making it more difficult to leash him, but he is eventually leashed with a treat. He immediately jumps up on the handler with a loose body. He is lead to the street where he relieves himself and sniffs around. He jumps up on the handler a few more times. He walks ahead of the handler, pulling lightly. He pulls moderately towards passersby. He allows petting and for his leash to be clipped. He returns to his crate willingly and takes a treat. 4/12/26: It is reported that Royale is vocalizing and pulling hard towards other dog. 4/10/26: Royale is reported to be panting heavily during walks, wide eyed and hypervigilant. 4/7/26: Royale is at the front of his crate with a loose body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Royale walks close to the handler with mild leash tension. Sometimes, he sits right in front of the handler and then jumps in them to solicit pets. Afterwards, the handler clips their leash and returns Royale to his kennel. 03/26/26: Royale is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches, he is leashed while distracted with a treat and once leashed exits the room to the street following handler. Outside Royale is hypervigilant and walks with handler for a while passing people and dogs outside. Royale pulls mildly on leash and walks forward for a while, once inside he is brought back in for his assessment. Once he finishes he is brought back to kennel without further issue.

Date of intake:: 6/12/2026

Date of initial:: 6/12/2026

Summary:: Tense, but allows all handling for brief exam and update of tasks.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Royale so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to the bite incident towards the resident dog and the risk of redirection we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Royale's previous owner stated that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Royale was observed to be tense and trembling during intake. During his assessment Royale was observed to seek exit. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Royale would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Royale was observed to be heavily panting throughout his medical exam. If Royale displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Royale's previous owner stated that he will lunge at small animals. Royale will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: Royale has been observed to jump up and snap at handlers while on leash and while in the room were his crate is. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Royale to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
