Harvest
Hello, my name is Harvest. My animal id is #238450. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/4/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormHarvest is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care as well as on intake. Harvest was found by a good samaritan and when interacting with him, bit them on the hand not breaking skin. Harvest in care has been tense during interactions, not wanting to enter back into kennel despite multiple staff having to coax him back and overall not acclimating to the care center environment. Medically, Harvest has entropion and secondary corneal ulcers in both eyes. He will require corrective surgery to repair this.

Officers responded to a call regarding a dog that needed to be removed from the finder's home. The finder had taken Harvest in as a stray, noting he initially appeared friendly. After placing him in the backyard, the finder reported that Harvest became aggressive. When approached, Harvest bit the finder's hand; the bite did not break the skin or leave a mark. Officers used a control pole to safely place Harvest into a crate, where he continued to bite at the crate repeatedly once inside. Harvest is a fearful dog who has shown gradual improvement with patient, low-pressure handling. Initially tense and wary, he now comes forward for treats and allows leashing with gentle coaxing. On walks, Harvest maintains a relaxed frame and loose leash but can become tense and hesitant when returning indoors, occasionally balking when taken back to his kennel or back into the center. He takes treats gently but remains sensitive to touch and sudden movement. Harvest would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner experienced with fearful/denfensive and handling-sensitive dogs.

Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Date of intake:: 10/4/2025
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Unknown history)
Date of assessment:: 10/10/2025
Summary:: Due to Harvest's denfensive behavior, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/12/25 Harvest is introduced to a female helper dog. Harvest will aproach the gate with a neutral frame, appearing aloof. He is guided into the female dog's pen in order to greet her face-to-face. Harvest will sniff the female dog as well as allow himself to be sniffed. He appears aroused as he displays raised hackles. With a miniature start/stop, Harvest engages in play with the helper dog, exchanging body contact and paw slaps. Harvest is bouncy, remaining in one spot as he bounces up and down, being tolerant to the female dog body slamming herself into him. Both dogs are separated to decompress, and Harvest will disengage completely, exploring to himself. Harvest is returned to kennel.
Summary (5):: 10/14/25 (PM) Harvest is at the front of his kennel vocalizing at the handler with a wagging tail. Harvest is easily leashed and taken to outside to the play yard. Harvest will waddle his way outside appearing bouncy and loose. Harvest will enter the pens and allow the handler to place a drag leash onto him. Harvest will explore the pen, sniffing in different parts of the yard to himself. The handler will administer him treats in which he takes gently. Harvest remains soft, allowing pets to his back and head. He is returned to the facility where he enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 10/12/25 (PG Note): Harvest is loose and wiggly at the front of his kennel, eagerly jumping up as the handler approaches. He allows leashing with ease and is escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on him, and he roams the yard freely, sniffing and exploring. Initially, he does not notice another dog in the adjacent play yard, but when he does, his tail lowers and slight hackles rise. The dogs engage in a nose-to-nose greeting through the gate. When his playmate offers play bows with a loose and wiggly frame, Harvest gradually begins to engage, displaying soft body language and interest in play. Once the gate is opened, both dogs bounce around each other, briefly becoming entangled before handlers intervene and separate them. Harvest is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. See dog-to-dog note for more information. 10/12/25 Harvest is standing in front of his kennel door vocalizing at the handler when they approach his kennel. Harvest is easily leashed and taken for a walk. Harvest will trot his way outside displaying a soft, neutral frame as he waddles at a relaxed pace. Harvest doesn't take any treats when administered, muzzle nudging it away from him. The walk will commence, and Harvest maintains his relaxed pace and frame. When returning to the facility, he is reluctant, pumping his breaks at the top of the hill, refusing to commence his walking. Harvest is taken through the second floor, boarding the elevator with no issue. He will waddle to his kennel room as well as entering his kennel with no issue. 10/11/25: Harvest is sleeping in the back of his kennel as the handler approaches. He comes up to the door as the handler opens the door. He is able to be leashed with ease and will walk slowly out of his kennel and down the hallway. Outside, Harvest will continue to walk slowly, sniffing carefully. When returning to the Care Center, Harvest will plant and look a the other side of the street. The handler crosses the street with him and he will walk down the side walk. They jog across the street once they are parallel with the door. He enters the building easily but will stop at the kennel room door. The handler places a towel on the ground and harvest walks over the threshold and into his kennel where he is secured safely. 10/09/25 Harvest will step forward in his kennel as he sees the handler approaching. Harvest is easily leashed and taken for a walk. Harvest maintains a relaxed frame as he trots alongside the handler. Harvest will keep a relaxed pace throughout his walk, appearing aloof as he doesn't engage with the handler. Harvest is returned to the facility, where he will pump the breaks slightly when being taken into the building however with coaxing, he is able to move forward and enter the building with no issue. Harvest will enter his kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 10/6/25(PM): Harvest's behavior remains consistent with note from 10/05/25. On the way back to kennel, he will balk and is not easily lured with treats. Handler and a second handler place a towel on the floor in front of him and he is slowly lured into kennel. Handler is able to clip their lead while he is distracted on the towel before entering kennels. (AM): Harvest is at the back of his kennel as the handler approaches. He will come forward and take treats from the handler's hand through the bars. Harvest will shy away from the leash and flinched when the handler got it over his head gently. He walks to the behavior office on a loose leash slightly ahead of the handler. Harvest will walks around the room sniffing and marking before starting to wander around the door. Harvest is then taken on a walk. Outside, he will watch pigeons intently but lose interest once they walk away. He will sniff and his body becomes loose, his tail unfurling. Upon entering the Care Center, Harvest will tense and tuck his tail again. He stops at the kennel room entrance and will not take treats. The handler then places a towel at the entrance and he steps onto it slowly. He is then able to walk the short distance back into his kennel where the handler drops a handful of treats before securing him safely. 10/05/25: Harvest is lying at the back of kennel with a tense frame as handler approaches. He slowly rises and comes to the front for tossed treats. Harvest is hesitant of leashing, so handler lures Harvest through the lead using treats. As the lead slowly closes in place, Harvest flinches. Handler speaks to him with a soft tone and tosses him treats which he begins to eat. Harvest is wary to exit kennel but is able to be slowly lured out with a treat trail and once in the hallway, walks to the Canine Behavior Office without issue. Harvest spends time sniffing and marking along the room and takes pieces of chicken breast gently from hand. Handler does not attempt to touch Harvest due to his slightly tense frame and reported behaviors. After his session, Harvest is walked back to the kennel room and will balk in the threshold but is able to be lured into kennel with a treat trail and slow approach. Handler tosses treats in between his front feet, and the lead falls off of his head as he looks down.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: harvest is noted in the care center to flich when leash and tense when touch around his neck and face, fliches with sundden movements. These behaviors suggest a heightened sensitivity to touch and handling, requiring slow, predictable interactions and desensitization to physical contact. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity.
