Inky
Hello, my name is Inky. My animal id is #265162. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/28/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - no time for animal.
Inky is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Inky is a nervous but friendly dog who was surrendered due owner unable to care for her. We have assessed that Inky has cherry eye of her right eye and has some eye discharge that may be due to a lack of tear production. While she was tolerant of all other portions of her exam, Inky has behaviorally not allowed diagnostics or treatments for her eyes in house. Inky may need daily maintenance with their medical condition and will require further follow up with outside vet care.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Nervous, tense, seeks exit, flails head when touching face, tolerant of other tasks
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): due to Inky's high levels of anxiety, fearfulness, and handling/touch sensitivity we recommend a home with older respectful dog Savvy children.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful: Inky was noted to be nervous during her medical exam and began flailing her head when her face was examined due to her medical condition. It is important to move slow with Inky and to be cautious when touching her and other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Jimmy was awesome noted to be fearful during her handling assessment Please see handout on handling /touch sensitivity and decompression period. Anxiety: Inky has been highly anxious during her stay in care - panting heavily, pacing, seeking exit, and unable to settle or focus on her own. If she displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see Handel on generalized anxiety.
