Animal Profile

Bruno

Hello, my name is Bruno. My animal id is #146665. I am a desexed male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/3/2026, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Bruno is at risk for behavior reasons. Bruno was surrender because he was not getting along with a member of the household. Bruno had escalated to giving this person a warning bite which did not break the skin. He is reactive to other dogs, and on one occasion bit a dog while on a walk. This bite did not break the skin. He requires an experienced owner familiar with managing his reactivity. Bruno has done well with staff and volunteers in the care center, warming up quickly with a considerate approach. Medically, he is over conditioned and has some dental disease.

Meet Bruno, a handsome and loyal dog looking for the right experienced home. Bruno will thrive with an owner who understands dog behavior and is comfortable managing leash reactivity. He can be reactive toward other dogs while on walks, and due to his size and strength, he will do best with someone who has experience working with and continuing to train dogs with these behaviors. Bruno is seeking an adult-only home where he can enjoy a predictable environment and build a strong bond with his people. One of Bruno's great qualities is that he has previously lived successfully with cats, showing that he can coexist peacefully with feline companions. With the right guidance, structure, and commitment, Bruno has the potential to be a wonderful companion for someone willing to invest in his success.

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to potential challenges, we recommend an adult only home for Bruno. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Bruno lived successfully with cats. However, due to his reactivity to other dogs, we recommend he be the only dog and does not visit the dog park.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Bruno is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource guarding: Bruno is reported to become tense and hover over his toys. We recommend Bruno be left alone when engaged in play. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Bruno’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from him, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bruno was not getting along with a member of the household. Bruno has escalated to biting although no further details were provided. The bite did not break the skin but was reported to be a clear warning. It is important to move slowly with Bruno, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Bite history (human): Bruno bit a member of the household. Details about the incident were not provided. The bite did not break the skin. Please see handout on Bie History. Bite history (dog): Bruno has bitten a large dog while on a walk. This bite did not break the skin. Please see handout on Bite History. Anxiety: Bruno is reported to have generalized anxiety in the home. If Bruno displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity: Bruno has shown reactivity on leash towards other dogs. He will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Bruno's owner reports that he will jump up and chew on the leash while on walks. We recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
