Secret
Hello, my name is Secret. My animal id is #221607. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Secret is at risk due to behavior concerns. Secret has shown to be social and affectionate, she displays a loose-bodied, wiggly, and enjoys attention from handlers. When taken out of her kennel she will engage in kennel fighting, lunging,and hard barks when passing other dogs making it difficult for handlers to walk her. Medically, Secret has suspected skin allergies and is receiving treatment for CIRDC currently. Secret has a $500 stipend to be paid to a New Hope Partner if pulled.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! I lived with children in my previous home. I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Secret may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. Single-pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors reported by her previous owner and displayed in care, the behavior team recommends for Secret to be the only dog in the home and not attend dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Secret has been a bit fearful during her stay in care, but does well when approached slowly with treats. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Secret should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. Secret would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Inm care secret has begun to kennel fight when passing kennels, lunging and hard barks, and will hard bark at door while on walks.
