Animal Profile

Gwendalyn

Hello, my name is Gwendalyn. My animal id is #254602. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/16/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Gwendalyn is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Gwendalyn is reactive toward other dogs, and the stress of the shelter environment has led to behavioral deterioration. She has been observed vocalizing, engaging in kennel fighting, spinning, and throwing herself against her transfer door. Recently, while a staff member was attempting to remove her from her kennel, Gwendalyn redirected onto the staff member's hand while barking and jumping toward another dog through the upper kennel bars. The contact did not break the skin. Outside of her kennel, Gwendalyn is social and affectionate with staff, readily leaning in for petting and accepting treats. Medically, Gwendalyn is underweight.

Gwendalyn was brought to the Care Centers as a stray, so her behavior history in a home environment is unknown. While in the Care Centers, she has displayed reactivity toward other dogs when they pass by her kennel. On one occasion, following a kennel-fighting incident, Gwendalyn redirected her frustration toward a staff member and made contact with the staff member's leg. No skin was broken during the incident. Outside of her kennel, Gwendalyn is a social and affectionate dog who enjoys attention and leans into petting. Due to her dog reactivity and history of redirected behavior, Gwendalyn should be placed through a New Hope Partner into an adult-only home that can manage her behavior and continue her training using positive reinforcement-based methods. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

Summary (6):: 6/13/26 (PM): Gwendalyn approaches the front of her kennel with a neutral body; as the handler attempts to leash her, Gwendalyn starts to fixate on the wall shared with the dog next to her as they begin to bark. Gwendalyn switches between fixating on the wall and then the transfer door; at the transfer door, she high pitch vocalizes. The handler presents a treat for her and presses the squeaker, but she doesn't pay attention. After a couple minutes, Gwendalyn finally looks back at the handler and allows herself to be leashed. Once sh exits the kennel, Gwen pulls towards that same dog; in the hallway, she fixates and pulls towards each crate in the hallway; the handler shortens the leash until they get outside. Once outside nad crossing the street, Gwen stops walking and lays down on the road; the handler speaks to her in a soft voice and she continues the walk. On the street, Gwen walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to people. she also allows pets. While walking back to the shelter, Gwe stops and lays down again; the handler picks her up and carries her inside to the office. There, she sniffs around and allows pets from another handler. After a minute, the handler clips their leash, and walks and returns Gwen to her kennel. 6/13/26 (midday): As handler approaches the kennel, Gwendalyn is at the front with widened eyes scaling the walls and barking in the direction of the neighboring dog. As handler begins to unlock the kennel, she would continue to fixate and jump towards the other dog through the top bars. Handler attempts to use a treat to distract her, which didn’t work - handler then attempts to leash her, she would jump onto the kennel door with her front two paws and quickly bites the handlers hand for a brief second. Handler jerks their hand back with the leash and the kennel door was shut. Interaction was then ceased, the bite did not break and skin and left the area wet with saliva and slight redness.

Summary (7):: 6/13/26 (AM): Gwendalyn is reported to throw herself at the transfer door, hypersalivate, scale the kennel walls, and pace back and forth in kennel while the room is quiet. 6/10/26: Gwendalyn is reported to be kennel reactive while leaving the room; doing so, she spun around towards the handler. 6/9/26: Gwendalyn is observed to spin in her crate, as well as push her crate while reacting to dogs walking past. 6/8/26: Gwendalyn is at the front of her crate with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. Gwendalyn pulls moderately during her walk. She picks a few locations where she sniffs and investigates. She accepts pets from handler on her head, back and sides. She is returned to her crate with no issue. 6/2/26 (midday): Gwendalyn has been observed to bite at her crate bars and vocalize. 6/1/25: Gwendalyn is at front of her crate with a neutral body where she is easily leashed and pulled from crate. She comes out of her crate pulling hard. During her walk she continues to pull but the intensity changes as she walks. She accepts treats and pets from handler. She is returned to kennel with no issue. 5/25/26: Gwendalyn is observed to be pacing in her kennel while licking the bars, she will persistently bark at dogs that will pass by her kennel. Handler also reports that once removed from her kennel, she will quickly turn and launch towards them. 5/22/26: It is reported by staff that Gwendalyn is pulls towards other dogs while entering and leaving the kennel room. 5/19/26: Gwendolyn is at the front of her kennel barking repeatedly and jumping back and forth. The handler presents the leash and Gwendolyn pushes her way out of the kennel. She jumps out and lands on the ground, she then immediately tries to pull towards the kennels with a tense body. She is kept away and pulls hard out to the street. As she pulls, Gwendolyn begins coughing and gasping. Gwendolyn relieves herself a few times. When people pass, she pulls towards them with a soft body and wagging tail. When a dogs passes, Gwendolyn stares at them with a forward posture and tense body. When the dogs leaves her sight, she continues to pull forward towards the dog. Gwendolyn then observes a dog across the street. she stares at the dog with a tense body and is easily called away. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Gwendalyn so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the poor impulse control we recommend an adult only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Gwendalyn has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the behaviors displayed in Care Centers, Gwendalyn should go to a New Hope Partner.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Gwendalyn has been observed to jump up on handlers persistently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Bite history (human)/On Leash Reactivity: Gwendalyn has been observed to lunge towards the other dogs in the kennel room and become tense when seeing other dog on the stree. This behavior is not easily redirected, and she escalated to redirecting her frustration onto a staff member's hand. Gwendalyn will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
