What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Matilda Skye so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to exuberance and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. Single Pet/ No Dog Parks: Due to the high level of reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Matilda's previous owner states that she is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Matilda will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Matilda's previous owner states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. MOUTHINESS: Matilda mouths with light pressure during play. See handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Matilda's previous owner states that she is fearful when her paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Matilda to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. FEARFUL: Matilda may initially become timid in new places and take time to warm up. See handout on Decompression Period. ANXIETY: Matilda has been observed to become anxious, unsettled, or whine and seek exit within the care center. See handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Matilda has been observed to fixate when seeing another dog while on leash. Recently Matilda's reactivity has increased and it is not able to be redirected. She remains fixated on the dog even when they are out of sight. Matilda will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Matilda's previous owner states that she pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
