Animal Profile

Shadow Xl

Hello, my name is Shadow Xl. My animal id is #225417. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/24/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- domestic violence.

Shadow XL has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is very overweight and has difficulty walking. He also has been drinking a lot and urinating a lot and his blood work suggest that maybe he has over active adrenal glands (Cushing's disease). He needs care and attention and diagnostic tests that we cannot provide.

I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shadow so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children (Under 5): Due to Shadow's previous instances of fearful defensive behavior when hearing loud noises, we recommend a home with no young children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: In Shadows previous home, he was reported to react to loud noises and arguments in the home which escalated to a bite on one of the former owners. It is important to move slowly with Shadow to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Shadow to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout for Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): On 4/19/25 Shadows former owner reported that there was a verbal dispute that became physical, and Shadow bit the owner on the foot as a reaction. The bite left bruising but did not break skin. This behavior will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Shadow and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
