Animal Profile

Reginald

Hello, my name is Reginald. My animal id is #249153. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/7/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Reginald is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Reginald has been difficult to remove from the kennel and walk safely due to the intensity of his leash biting and arousal. Prior to this, in calmer settings, Reginald has been able to interact with handlers and engage with enrichment games. Once out of the kennel, he has difficulty settling and pants heavily, seeks exts, and recently has been jumping up towards handlers with an open mouth while vocalizing. Medically, Reginald has alopecia.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Reginald was surrendered as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Reginald initially presented as anxious and intermittently difficult to leash due to persistently jumping on the kennel door or attempting to push out. But he would accept treats, and that was used to refocus him during leashing. During walks, he has been screeching and pulling towards other dogs. But he has been leash biting with handlers and staff when trying to remove him from the kennel for walks, increasing in intensity. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Regianld be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope partner that can address his challenges. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

Summary (6):: 4/6/26: Reginald is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. He continues to bark at the door as the handler attempts to leash him. He engages in licking cheese off of the ground but would stop and try the grab the leash as the handler goes to leash him. Once leashed, then pulls hard with heavy panting on the way to the behavior room. He would constantly turn around towards the handler with an open mouth while heavy panting and vocalizing. In the room, he would pull around the room with dilatated pupils and heavy panting. He would constantly try to pull towards the door while vocalizing and heavy panting when he hears dogs barking. He would constantly jump up on the handlers with an open mouth while vocalizing. He is able to engage in a snuffle mat, a lick mat, and sit to receive treats. He is easily distracted by his surroundings and would constantly walk away to pull towards the doors and jump on the couch. He pulls hard on his hind legs, while barking and vocalizing on the way back to his kennel. He tries to pull towards the dog in kennel next to his before being quickly placed back into his kennel. He tries to grab the handlers leash as they quickly unleashed him and closed the door. 03/31/26: Reginald is standing at the front of his kennel, constantly jumping up. Handler is able to leash him on the first attempt. On the way to the play yard, Reginald sees another dog outside the gate and begins screeching and pulling toward the gate. Once inside the yard, he displays dilated pupils, pacing, and high levels of anxiousness. He relieves himself and the session is ended. Reginald is returned to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (7):: 3/29/26: Seen screeching at dogs on a walk when passing by them through a fence. Screeches when returning to kennel. 3/23/26: Reginald is reported to be mouthy and difficult to leash but spray cheese works to distract him while leashing. "leash me with spray cheese or treats on the floor" signage is placed on his kennel as well as a bottle of spray cheese. 3/17/26: Reginald is at the front of his kennel jumping onto the door as the handler approaches. As the open the door he will attempt to push out so the handler will spread a large handful of treats on the ground. Reginald will eat the treats as the handler leashes him. He will then pull hard out to the yard. Once in the yard, Reginald will pace around, sniffing briefly and relieving himself. After a while, he is returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 3/12: Reginald was observed to stiffen and crouch low, tail high and unmoving, face and eyes hard, lips puckered, when a medium-sized dog passed his crate. He fixates and tracks the other dog, darting in either direction the other dog moves. 03/08/26(Assessment Note): Reginald is standing at the front of his kennel and attempts to bolt out three times before handler is able to leash him. He is then escorted to the assessment room. Inside the room, Reginald appears anxious and repeatedly begs for treats, jumping up on handlers and demand barking as handlers attempt to take a photo. He leans in and allows all handling. He runs without becoming aroused, does not respond to knock, and will run to the toy, grip it, shake it, and then release it. Reginald is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For additional details, see behavioral assessment.

Date of intake:: 3/8/2026

Summary:: allowed handling assessment

Date of initial:: 3/7/2026

Summary:: Wiggly, freeze , stops to eat treats

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13) - Due to Reginald's lack of manners, poor impulse control, his high levels of anxiety, and lack of inhibition, leash biting, and arousal concerns. We recommend that he be placed in a home without children. Place with a New Hope partner: Reginald has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", and "Down" be reinforced to replace frustration and teach Reginald to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. See handout on (Basic manners/poor impulse control) Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition - Reginald has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Reginald's teeth make contact with skin). Please see the handout on (Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition). Anxiety - Reginald appears anxious at the care center, whining when handler walks away and his assessment. If Reginald displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. See handout on (Anxiety).
