Maple
Hello, my name is Maple. My animal id is #220828. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/19/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMaple is on the at-risk list due to behavior reasons. Maple was surrendered to ACC due to being involved in an incident that resulted in the death of a cat. While at the care center, Maple has been social seeming, greeting with loose body and jumping up onto handler. However, she becomes aroused quickly, pawing at handler, jumping on desks and chairs. When she is touched during this state, she bites handlers wrist without breaking skin. Otherwise, she is easily handled by staff and will accept gentle pets. Medically, Maple is underweight.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Maple was brought to the Care Center after a bite incident with the resident cat that led to its death. In the Care Centers, Maple is anxious and has a low threshold for arousal. She was reported to jump at staff with an open mouth, counter surfer, have dilated eyes and bit staff member's wrist with moderate pressure. The bite did not break skin but left red marks. Maple should go to an adult only foster home through a New Hope Partner that can manage her behavior using positive reinforcement.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Date of intake:: 2/19/2025
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, Limited history
Behavior toward cats:: Kill a cat
Bite history:: Yes, Maple killed a cat in her previous home. During her handling assessment, Maple quickly bit the handler on the wrist but did not break skin, only left red marks.
Date of assessment:: 2/21/2025
Summary:: Maple was brough into the Care Care center after a bite incident with a cat that led to its death. When Maple was brough to the behavior room, she was highly aroused, had difficult settling, jumping on counters and the couch. She repeatedly jumped on staff in an attempt to get treats from their pouches. Her eyes are dilated and she is panting. When the assessor attempted to position her, Maple quickly turned and bites the assessors wrist with moderate pressure, when she touched Maple. There was no broken skin but she did leave red marks. The session was ended and Maple was returned to her kennel. She was reported to jump up with an open mouth during her walk. Due to these behaviors, Maple will not receive a handling assessment.
Summary:: 2/27/25: Maple greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. She then looks up at handler with a soft body and wagging tail.
Summary (6):: 3/6/25: Maple is laying in her kennel upon approach but stands with a loose and wiggly body as handler unlocks the kennel. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She is walked on the street where she is neutral bodied and alternates from exploring her surroundings and turning to handler for treats. She is responsive to handler when called and will sit for treats. She allows petting but does not seek it. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel. 3/5/25: ACS report that they did not realize Maple had a ball when they reached down to place her on a dragline. Maple them head whipped towards their arm, she made contact. This did not leave a mark.
Summary (7):: 2/28/25: Maple is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and taken for a walk outside. On the walk, she would jump on the handler to demand for treats. When an outsider was walking too close, she tried to jump on the person. She would walk close by the handler and stop in front to receive treats. She was comfortable reapproaching the handler and would sit and wait patiently to receive treats again. She was able to return back to kennel with no issues. 2/21/25- Maple is at the front of her kennel with a wiggly body and is easily leashed, she is taken to the driveway for her walk. She sniffs around and relieves herself. She follows the command to sit and takes treats. When handler goes to pet her on her head, she quickly jumps onto handler. Handler straights arm and she jumps down. She has a moderate pull when sniffing around. She is taken for her assessment. Handlers used spray cheese on the floor and treats tossed to distract while being leashed. She darts around, counter surfs looking for treats and jumps on handlers multiple times. When the handler goes to touch her, she jumps onto handler and bites their wrist and releases quickly. No broken skin. Handlers ended assessment, she was easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue. 2/20/25: Maple is at the front with soft body and wagging tail. She accepts treats gently through the bars. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She is brought to the yard where she is loose and wiggly and jumps up onto handler, pawing at their torso. Handler turns their body sideways to encourage her to get down but shoves her whole face into handlers treats pouch instead. Treats are tossed on the ground to redirect her. She is then walked around the perimeter of the yard allowing her to explore. She will periodically turn to handler seeking treats. IF handler allows her to approach, she will jumps up onto handler pawing and stealing treats. She returns to kennel without issue. 2/19/25: Maple is at the front of her kennel as handlers approach. She is leashed while accepting treats from handlers and taken to the play yard for her walk. She exits kennel without issue and follows front handler who tosses treats for her to follow. She reaches the yard and jumps on handlers in a social manner but is redirected using treats. She is consistently tossed treats throughout the interaction which she readily follows. She uses the bathroom while outside and is loose and wiggly when walking. She is brought back inside after a while, allowing handler to clip her leash and bring her back to kennel. She stops at the front to eat leftover food but is coaxed inside by treats tossed by handlers into the kennel. She returns without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the noted behaviors during the handling assessment, Maple should go to a home with older behavioral savvy children. No cats: Maple had a bite incident that led to the death of a cat. She should not go to a home with cats. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home and Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Maple be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Maple to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Maple to new and unfamiliar situations.
Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human),Bite history (other animal)
Potential challenges comments:: Bite history (human)/Bite history (other animal)/Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Maple bit and held onto a cat which led to its death. When the assessor attempted to position her during petting part of the assessment, Maple turned and bit her wrist but did not break skin. She left red marks. Please see the handout on Bite History. Anxiety/Low threshold for arousal: Maple is highly anxious and has a low threshold for arousal. She bit the handler on the wrist with moderate pressure, no broken skin. Positive reinforcement and daily enrichment should be used to help Maple learn impulse control. Please see the handout on Arousal and General Anxiety.
