Otis
Hello, my name is Otis. My animal id is #221823. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/6/2025.
Otis is at risk due to behavior concerns. During his previous stay in the care center, Otis was observed to lack basic manners and be on leash reactive. He was returned from foster due his dog reactivity, and in care he continues to display the same behavior. Otis is reported to cage fight while being removed or returned from the room. He will hard bark, lunge, growl, and pull very hard towards other dogs. Recently, he has been observed to be bouncing back and forth from his kennel walls all whilst barking and heavily panting. He has remained social with handlers. Medically, he is apparently underweight.

I arrived as a stray so the staff don't know what my life was like before coming to ACC, but I had various injuries that I'm recovering from really well. I only require a little extra paperwork to be filled out and a few extra vet visits this year because one of my injuries was likely a bite wound (now fully healed). I'm thankful for everyone at ACC taking such good care of me, but I think I'd like to find my forever home now. So what are you waiting for? Ask about me today! What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I am playful and cute! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Handler offers some treats which Otis takes with moderate pressure. He exits kennel and pulls hard out to the street, due to Otis' frantic pulling handler keeps him on a shorter leash for the majority of his walk. He will pull toward dogs he sees on the street during his walk and passes people on the street without issue. Otis walks for a while with handler and stops to use the bathroom during his walk. He also accepts treats tossed by handler while outside, after a while he is brought back to the care centers. He pulls hard when returning but allows his leash to be clipped before returning to kennel. At the front of his kennel Otis baulks and slight muscle needs to be used to return him. 5/29/25: It is reported that Otis is finger painting his kennel with feces and is jumping up and down while in kennel. 5/25/25: Otis is observed to be bouncing back and forth from his kennel walls whilst barking, heavily panting, hyper-salivating, and has dilated pupils. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He pulls hard while jumping on hind legs on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, pulls hard with a tense body towards dogs in the garage, and could not be redirected with treats or toys. He would stop and fixate where the dog was at even when they were gone. He pulls hard on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump on the handlers and on the couch, and would take treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to kennel, and bolts out of kennel when handler places him in. He then baulks to the ground and would not go in for treats. The handler had to muscle him back in. 5/18/25: Otis was returned to shelter due to his dog reactivity. He is leashed and removed from kennel. As he exits the room he intensely kennel fights and handler has to use a lot of muscle to remove him from care centers. While engaging with LATTE items in the driveway he spots another dog and he begins to hard bark, lunge, growl, and pulling so hard to the point of standing on his hind legs. Handler has to hold him back and use a lot of muscle to hold him back. He is returned to his kennel, still pulling very hard and kennel fighting. 4/19/25- ACS reported that Otis cage fights and pulls hard when out on walks. He is observed to on his kennel dark and bark. 4/16/25: Otis is at the front of the kennel with a wiggly body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He begins to stand on his hind legs as he pulls, Handler tosses him a toy and he briefly looks towards it but resumes the behavior. Otis is brought to the driveway and the same behavior repeats. He pulls hard and fixates on dogs. Otis then relieves himself and handler brings him back to his kennel and tosses treats to encourage him to return. The leash is removed without issue.

He displays a high level of movement, pacing back and forth at the front and jumping up and down of the kennel door. He is leashed using a treat to keep him still. Once out of kennel, Otis pulls towards the other dogs kennel, walking on his back legs. In the hall he pulls into the other dog rooms as he passes the. HE is walked to the yard which is empty and placed on a drag leash. He wanders exploring a relieving himself. There is a sign on his kennel that states he bites the leash when being returned to kennel. So, handler tosses treats into the kennel and is then able to remove the leash without issue. 3/6/25: Otis is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He lifts his paw and places it on the kennel bars as handler unlocks the door. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is walked in the yard where he is aloof, exploring his surroundings. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Otis so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Otis has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: During his previous stay Otis has been observed to pull hard towards other dogs in the kennel room and while on leash. During his current stay in the care center Otis has been observed to fixate, pulls hard/lunge, and growl/vocalize towards dogs and people while on leash Otis will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
