Animal Profile

Rza

Hello, my name is Rza. My animal id is #207072. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/15/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - pregnant.

Rza is on the at-risk list due to behavior. Although she tolerates petting and attention in the shelter when given enough time to warm up, she has an extremely challenging time adjusting to a new home environment as observed during her first few days in shelter and in the foster home. She has recently displaying signs of fear, anxiety, or stress when staff attempt to clean or feed around her kennel. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! Rza has made huge improvements since her last assessment, so much so that she seems to be a different cat! She was asleep, but woke when spoken to, came forward immediately, curious and pawed gently through the door, and then when the door was opened she remained at the front with a tall tail, allowed and enjoyed all petting, leaning in for cheek rubs, arching her back, with her tail swishing slightly. See her video! She is however very carrier averse and carriers cause her significant stress. Rza has been known to love attention (see video) but can become very reactive especially to carriers and as a result can become very fearful or stressed. She will need time to warm up to her new home, see notes above and in "potential challenges." We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Rza is said to shine when she can make a connection with a person she loves. Some of us think of friendship as a journey and others are more results focused. Rza who is probably closer to the results end of the spectrum, as all this journey stuff in the middle doesn't seem to suit her as well. Rza is not a fan of strangers, which adds an additional layer of challenge to shelter life. Her previous family also noted that Rza doesn't really enjoy being around many people (I totally get that) and I kind of want to sigh on her behalf. Firstly because she doesn't seem cut out for Care Center life and secondly because how is she supposed to put her best self out there and, perhaps more importantly, how can we go from stranger to connection? Well, with a whole lot of patience, love, and time. I think Rza has so much to offer and only needs someone to take a chance on her.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/16/24 FB32 1- Both sides of her kennel are covered with the door covers. She immediately begins hissing, growling, lunging, and stress meowing loudly upon approach when standing about 2 feet of distance away. It takes at about 1-2 minutes for to calm down. I mark with good girl and she repeats her severely high FAS behavior. I wait again for a minute for her to calm down, then mark and leave. 2- Repeated the same behavior. 3- Repeated the same behavior. 8/20/24 FB04 When staff speak loudly or with a high pitch voice for sweet talk, Rza hisses, lunges, swats at the door, stress meows, and thrashes her tail. 8/20/24 Copied from Behavior summary from this date due to lack of space. Rza is a shy, timid, and independent cat who needs time to adjust to her new home. When opening the door, she hisses harshly and begins thrashing her tail. She was sitting at the back of the kennel up and focuses on the assessor with a tense body and wide eyes and begins growling. She lowers her head to sniff and accept puree treat offered on the scratcher tool. She leans back and hisses when the assessor reaches close with the tool and rubs her cheeks. The tip of Rza's tail continues to flick and she tilts her ears when pet on the head. When stroking her body, she looks back at the tool and continues to growl and lip lick. When bringing more of the puree treat in front of her, she eats more of it from the tool and then the assessor's finger as the assessor coaxes her to the front of the kennel. Her tail continues to flick or sway sideways and low grumbles; however, she tolerates petting and cheek rubs by hand when Rza is occupied with eating the puree treat in front of her. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 8.22.24 FB04 1-Resting in litter box, raised head when staff soft-talked. Had neutral body language, didn't vocalize at all. Staff slow-blinked for about 5 minutes before Rza gave one back. Staff marked and left. 2-Lying in litter box with dilated pupils and tail thrashing/flicking. Staff waited until she returned slow-blink, marked and left. 9.1.24 FB04 When seeing the cat next to her she came to the front of the kennel meowing for attention and stuck her paw out. She rubbed against the door and ate treats. 9/17/24 ACS Reported to be fearful (hiss or swat) during cleaning and feeding. After some time, she calms down and tolerates petting and attention. 9/18/24 Vol. Rza was inside den, and came out when spoken to, giving a full body stretch. She came to front of kennel with her tail in the air, and ate offered treats. She rubbed her face and body against kennel bars, then head bunted and leaned into petting. Her tail remained in the air, and she purred softly. 9/25/25 FB32 Curled up hiding in den, immediately comes to the front to greet me. Eagerly accepts treats and welcomes petting on head, leans in for cheek rubs. Tenses up and pushes away when handled but remains calm. Continues to enjoy more treats and petting.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate,Energetic

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period,Carrier aversion

Potential challenges comments:: She has a history of fractious behavior and despite some recent and significant improvements, she is still capable of highly fractious behavior. When leaving to go to a foster home on 9/8/24 it took 45 minutes to get her into a carrier. She struggled heavily and broke out of the towel and had to be netted. After being released in the foster home she began swatting whenever she got near the foster and is scheduled to be returned today. See additional notes in the behavior summary about how to better integrate her into a home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/20/24 See notes from this date above in enrichment notes. 9/7/24 Rza has made huge improvements since her last assessment, so much so that she seems to be a different cat! She was asleep, but woke when spoken to, came forward immediately, curious and pawed gently through the door, and then when the door was opened she remained at the front with a tall tail, allowed and enjoyed all petting, leaning in for cheek rubs, arching her back, with her tail swishing slightly. She loved squeeze up treats, never tired of petting and was calm when picked up not once but twice and held in the assessor's arms. She was calm when set back down and wanted more petting and treats, giving lots of head bunts. See her video! 9/9/24 Rza has a serious carrier aversion, so much so that after a long struggle ensued to get her in a carrier to go to a foster home (See potential challenges above) she was so upset in the new home that she began swatting and attacking the foster. Because of this is is very important that in her next home she be given a significant decompression period in a a room that she has entirely to herself, possibly for several days with access to food, water and a litter box. All these necessities should be near the door for easy replenishment and cleaning, but she should be given 12-24 hours with no interactions while ensuring that she has an adequate food and water supply. After this initial decompression the people can start replacing food, water and litter and begin evaluating her for additional interactions. These should be kept short, and the first thing they should do upon opening the door is offer wet food and squeeze up treats to distract her, possibly by pushing the food into the room with a long handled tool. Once she has calmed down, she can be given additional access to the home, slowly and with care. If the adopter can't put her in her own room they are at serious risk and it is highly recommended that she only go to a home that can provide this type of decompression. If there is only one bedroom this is an option if the adopter is willing to sleep in the living room during the decompression period. She has become a very friendly cat provided she isn't stressed out and moving her to a home has proven to be very stressful. Rza has been known to love attention (see video) but can become very reactive especially to carriers and as a result can become very fearful or stressed. She will need time to warm up to her new home, see notes above and in "potential challenges." We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
