Pre-Screener Form

Kala is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. Kala arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During her stay in the care center Kala has been observed to be highly fearful. When approached Kala was observed to maintain her distance with a tense, trembling body and a tucked tail. When the handler presented a collar Kala was observed to briefly lift her lip. In addition, in a separate incident, it was reported that Kala ducks away from handler, flinches, and cowers when clipping the leash is attempted. Kala has tolerated handling while at the care centers. Medically, she is apparently underweight and has dental disease.

She doesn't take treats when offered. After she relieves herself, the handler returns her to kennel with no issue. 4/9/25: Kala was at the front of her kennel, barking and jumping up at the door. As the handler began to open the door, Kala slightly head butted the door. Once she stopped, the handler leashed her with a pre-clipped leash. While leaving the room and the building, Kala walked right beside the handler. Once coming outside, another handler and dog were nearby, but Kala seemed uninterested. As Kala entered the street, she began to sniff her surroundings, including the handler, and relieved herself. She walked ahead of the handler with slight to moderate pulling. The handler gave Kala some treats, in which she took but spat out right after. Continuing the walk, the handler used treats to lure Kala into a sit position. She followed the command and the handler took pictures of her, and gave her the treats, in which she gently took. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Kala so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and escalating to baring teeth we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Kala has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. Observed to be highly avoidant of the handlers, during her medical exam she was observed to escalate to baring teeth. Their signs of discomfort must be respected; Kala should never be forced to interact, they should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people they find uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and force-free, reward-based training methods for Kala. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
