Summary:: Bubbles has been observed to be highly fearful. Observed to be low growling, hard barking, with a crouched body, raised hackles, lips curled and baring teeth. While on leash Bubbles has been observed to thrash intensely. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety, Bubbles is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 6/29/25: Bubbles is at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler crouches down and tosses a piece of cheese. Bubbles approaches the piece of cheese and is receptive. Bubbles approaches the kennel door and handler offers more cheese. Bubbles continues to be receptive with a low neutral body and low tail. Handler speaks in a soft tone and they hold their hand towards Bubbles. Bubbles becomes tense, begins to hard stares and then starts to loudly growl towards the handler. The handler ends the interaction due to FAS. 6/28/25: Bubbles is laying at the front of his kennel. HAndler approaches kneels and slowly extends their hand offering treats. He takes the treat from handlers hand. More treats are offered and Bubbles remains at the front taking treats. Main handler stands and unlocks the door as a second handler offers treats through the bars. However, once the door is opened, Bubbles retreats to the back of his kennel and curls up. Handler tosses treats but he will only eat the one's that land near him. Interaction is ceased due to stress levels. 6/25/25: Bubbles is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler crouches and speaks in a soft tone. Bubbles begins to growl and retreats the back of the kennel quickly. The handler is slowly able to be coax Bubbles back to the front of the kennel with treats. He sniffs then but is unreceptive. The handler opens the kennel door and presents the leash, Bubbles lip curls and retreats to the back of the kennel again. He begins to seek exon and attempts to crawl under the kuranda bed while growling. Handler ends the interaction. 6/23/25: Police Officers opened the trunk where there were two pop up crates. Bubbles begin to low growl, hard bark, body is crouched, hard staring, hackles raised, lip curling, and baring teeth as handler approaches. Handlers bring crate to the behavior office to attempt and leash. Single lasso is successfully placed but Bubbles begins to vocalize in a high pitch shriek, thrash intensely, alligator roll in the crate and using his paws to push on the crate. When more leash pressure is applied the behavior escalates in intensity. Crate is tilted almost vertically, and second rope is successfully placed on Bubbles. He continues to thrash briefly but ceases and is walked to his kennel without issue.

Summary:: VERY tense, hiding under kuranda bed, barking and growling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bubbles so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Bubbles has been observed to Bubbles has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl, hard bark, and bare teeth towards handlers. In kennel Bubbles is observed to hide under the kuranda bed when approached. While on leash he is observed to thrash intensely. It is important to move slowly with Bubbles, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
