Rosebud
Hello, my name is Rosebud. My animal id is #259046. I am a desexed female black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/6/2026.
Rosebud is at risk for behavior reasons. Rosebud recently underwent a gastric surgery for a foreign body. She has been on limited activity, strict diet and very limited enrichment opportunities. She has begun to deteriorate in care, seeking toys when taken out, pulling back towards the yard and not willing to walk far. Rosebud is a very playful, high-energy girl who loves to play but will show a mild amount of resource guarding, racing, body blocking or snatching her toys. Medically, she is a healthy dog recovering well from her surgery.

She responds well to praise and is such a good girl. She did not paw at any furniture and would only get on the couch if she was encouraged to come on it. Rosebud is a friendly, affectionate girl who came to the shelter as a stray alongside a large male mixed-breed dog. Since arriving, she has been sweet, social, and eager to interact with staff, winning everyone over with her loving personality. During her behavior assessment, Rosebud showed that she can become easily over-aroused when she's excited. With continued positive reinforcement, consistent routines, and appropriate outlets for her energy, she has the potential to thrive in a home that understands how to help her settle and succeed. If you're looking for a happy companion and are willing to invest a little time in helping her channel her enthusiasm, Rosebud could make a wonderful addition to your family. Come meet this sweet girl and see if she's the perfect match for you!

Rosebud jumps directly into the toy bin itself and staff has to gently pick her up out of it. They close the bin and leave Rosebud to sniff around the yard in an effort to get her to relax. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to potential challenges, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Rosebud has been observed to become snatchy with toys in the yard, racing over to them. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Rosebud’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from her, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Rosebud lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Anxiety: Rosebud appears anxious at the care center, panting, pacing in her crate. If Rosebud displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash Biting: During the jog portion of her assessment, Rosebud became over aroused and began to jump up and bite the leash. Should this arise in her new home we recommend walking her with treats or toys to interrupt the behavior. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low Threshold for Arousal: Rosebud has a low threshold for arousal, jumping up and biting at the leash during her assessment. Over arousal can tip into aggression. We recommend creating a calm, structured environment with consistent routines and clear boundaries. Avoid rough play or situations that trigger overexcitement and instead reinforce calm behaviors with rewards. Teaching cues like “settle” or “go to mat” can help redirect energy constructively. Regular mental enrichment, controlled exercise, and decompression time are key. Please see the handout on Arousal.
