Animal Profile

Facey

Hello, my name is Facey. My animal id is #260347. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/24/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - moving - no pets allowed.

Facey is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am not one to sit still! I will flourish in a home with someone that will keep me mentally and physically active! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. A volunteer writes: Facey is very smart and very playful. He is also mostly uninterested in the Care Center. The exception to this appears to be treats because they bring even the most wary Facey to the front of his condo. In his previous home, he was an active, talkative, bold, and independent guy who enjoyed spending time with his people, but took his time getting used to strangers. All of this is to say that fitting in hasn't come so easily to him. Snuggled up on top of his den, Facey turned to greet me and then stared at the ground. He has a lot of potential, he just needs someone who will go at his pace.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/30/26 FB09 Facey was lying in a loaf position in his litter box and looked up at the handler with dilated eyes. He eventually hissed and licked his lips when the handler offered him treats. He gently pawed at the click stick and hissed again. He then waited for the handler to leave before coming forward to eat his treats. 10/06/26 Vol. Was sitting on top of his den when I approached kennel. Had no toys so gave him a furfalle which he wasn’t interested in. Ate two Churus from the clicker. Only swatted when I was too slow to give him more Churu. No playing at this time. Never came down from his den. Still fearful. 10/9/26 FB09 Facey was crouched on top of his den with dilated eyes and hissed when the door opened. He leaned forward and sniffed the treats offered to him on the click stick. He eagerly began licking them up, eventually biting at the click stick when he finished eating. He then gently pawed at the click stick. 10/12/26 FB73 Facey is laying on top of his den, front paws tucked under his chest, observing the handler with dilated pupils as they approach. He is offered a squeeze up on the click stick and leans forward, eating all of it and pawing at the stick to request more. He is coaxed to the front of the kennel with the squeeze up and is able to be fed through the bars, occasionally pawing at the squeeze up with claws. Handler stops feeing him and waits for him to calm down before offering more squeeze up. This is repeated a few times, and he seems to understand the message by the end of the interaction. 10/13/26 Growls and hisses upon approach. Retreats and swats at the scratcher tool when attempting to make contact. He started to salivate and the interaction ended to help reduce stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back,Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Facey should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Facey is an active cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct his energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Facey engaged and exercise his brain in addition to his body.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Facey was lying in a loaf position inside his den with dilated eyes and hissed when the handler approached. When lifting his den cover, he lunged forward and hissed again. When the handler slowly offered him treats on the click stick, he leaned in to sniff them before swatting at the stick. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. Facey is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports he is friendly with children in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.
