Daisy
Hello, my name is Daisy. My animal id is #236474. I am a female tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/11/2025.
Daisy is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Daisy is a friendly geriatric dog who presented with a mass on her right side. Preliminary diagnostics indicate the mass might neoplastic, more specifically a mass cell tumor. Daisy will require a surgical consultation to determine the best approach to remove the mass and post surgical follow up.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Cytology interpretation: INTERPRETATION: Round cell neoplasia, most consistent with poorly granulated mast cell tumor; please see comments COMMENTS: Findings are most suggestive of a poorly granulated mast cell tumor; however, since only pre-stained slides are provided, it is unclear if these are only poorly granulated due to Diff-Quick stain which does not reliably stain mast cell granules. For confirmation, removal of the mass and submission for histopathology is recommended. If this is a cutaneous mast cell tumor, then histopathology will allow for tumor grading. If this is a subcutaneous mast cell tumor, while the grading system would not apply, histopathology will allow for assessment of other factors (mitotic activity, invasion, etc.) that may affect prognosis. If truly poorly granulated, this raises some concern for a higher grade neoplasm, but the cytologic appearance of mast cell tumors does not always correlate to their histologic grade and biologic behavior. Evaluation for evidence of metastasis (draining lymph nodes, abdominal and thoracic imaging, etc.) should be considered. Overall assessment: suspected neoplasia r/o mast cell tumor, unknown grade P. Seek placement asap, p is in need of surgical consultation/eval to determine if and how tumor can be removed. CTM and weekly rechecks

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/14/25 Daisy is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Daisy will approach the gate with a neutral body but due to the male dog's reactivity, she becomes nervous. Daisy will walk away from the gate, panting and pacing. This concludes the interaction.
Summary (7):: 09/13/25: (Assessment) Daisy greets the handler with a loose frame. Daisy is easily leashed and is then escorted to the Behavior Assessment (BA) room for assessment. Please refer to Behavior assessment summery for more details. Throughout the session, Daisy will pant and whine while exploring the room. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Daisy demonstrates poor impulse control by jumping up on handlers in social situations. This behavior suggests a need for foundational manners training, focusing on teaching polite greetings and reinforcing calm behavior through consistent redirection and reward-based methods. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Daisy began to display heavy panting, pacing and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety
