Happy
Hello, my name is Happy. My animal id is #234206. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - euthanasia request on 9/12/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormHappy is at risk due to behavioral reasons. His previous owner states that he is reactive while on leash. Noted that he will lunge towards small animals, dogs, and moving objects (such as cars, skateboards, and bikes). The owner also stated that Happy will bark, growl, and attempt to bite when held/ restrained. Happy is also mouthy and will jump up and mouth people. The owner also reports two bite incidents in the home. The first one occurred during a walk and the second one occured while in a crate. The owner was going to open the crate and Happy lunged and bit them. Neither bites broken skin. Medically Happy has CIRDC.

Happy is an 8-month-old medium mixed-breed who was surrendered by his previous owner. He's a young, energetic dog who loves zoomies, lap cuddles, and leaning in for affection, but he's also shown challenges with impulse control, reactivity, and handling sensitivity. In the yard, he'll bound around joyfully before settling down for face licks and snuggles with handlers. With time, training, and structure, Happy has the potential to grow into a wonderful companion. My Ideal Home Happy will need placement through an ACC New Hope partner with an experienced, adult-only home. He'll benefit from a structured environment, daily mental and physical enrichment, and positive reinforcement training to help him channel his energy in safe, appropriate ways. Consistency, patience, and clear routines will help him thrive. Good with Other Pets? Happy previously lived with dogs and a cat, but his owner reported mounting, rough play, and stress in the other pets. In the care center, he has shown reactivity to unfamiliar dogs and snaps toward cats. A single-pet home is recommended. Behavior Determination New Hope Only - Adult-only, single-pet placement. Happy has multiple challenges including mouthiness, resource guarding, reactivity, and handling sensitivity. He will need an experienced foster/adopter working with a positive-reinforcement trainer to set him up for success.

Summary (6):: 9/14/25: Happy is at the front of his pop-up crate with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out for a street walk. As soon as he reaches the driveway, Happy stops to relieve himself, then bounds ahead of handler, pulling moderately out to the sidewalk. During the walk, Happy explores his surroundings with a loose body, often walking in front of handler to sniff and pulling mildly to moderately on leash. At one point after sniffing around a tree, Happy shakes off and then bounds in front of handler exuberantly. He is not reactive to dogs or people walking by. He does not check in with handler on his own, but does look at them with perked ears and an open, relaxed mouth when they call his name. When Happy looks at them, handler says "sit," which he does, but then jumps on handler with a loose, wiggly body when they reach into their treat pouch. Handler pulls Happy off without issue and cues him to sit again, which he does, and he takes a treat from their hand slightly exuberantly. This is repeated a few more times during the walk with handler tossing treats. Happy is brought back into the building and returned to his pop-up crate without issue. 9/13/25: Happy is laying in the middle of his crate when handler approaches. He readily stands up and is leashed with ease. Happy pulls mildly as he exits the room, but easily makes his way to the play yard, and enters the first pen where he immediately relieves himself. A drag leash is then placed on Happy, and the handler engages in a game of fetch. After playing for a few minutes, Happy readily accepts pets from the handler, and is easily re-leashed. Happy is walked back into the building, and directed into a different room. Upon entry, other dogs are barking, but Happy has no reaction. Happy then goes into a new crate without any issues, and the leash is removed. 9/12/25: Happy is barking at the front of the crate when handler approaches. His barking increases when the leash is presented but is leashed without issue. Happy pulls hard to get outside and immediately relieves himself. He then walks at a calm pacing before picking up his speed and pulling in a zig zag. He scrambles in multiple directions during the walk but responds to the handler calling him back. After relieving himself Happy is taken to a bench and the handler sits beside him. Happy places half his body in the handlers lap and begins licking their face. He leans into pets and accepts treats gently. When this interaction is finished Happy is taken back to his crate. He does not walk in until treats are tossed inside.

ENERGY LEVEL:: His previous owners describe Happy as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the noted behaviors in his previous home, Happy should go to a home with adults only. No cats: Happy was noted to snap at cats. He should go to a home with no cats. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all the noted concerns in the home, Happy should go to a New Hope Partner that can manage his behaviors using positive reinforcement.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human),Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Happy is noted to have daily accidents in the home. Positive reinforcement should be used to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on House Soiling Resource guarding: Happy was reported to become tense, growl, and hard bark when toys, treats, food and random objects. Nothing should be taken away from Happy and positive reinforcement should be used to teach him the trade game. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive behavior/Anxiety: Happy is noted to have destructive tendencies in the home and is anxious when left alone. He will need daily enrichment and positive reinforcement training to help him focus his energy on things he can chew and play with. Please see the handouts on Destructive Behavior and General Anxiety. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Happy was noted to jump on people and be mouthy with young children. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Happy impulse control. Please see the handouts on Basic manners/poor impulse control and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Handling/touch sensitivity: Happy is reported to bark, growl and attempt to bite when held or restrained. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Happy to feel comfortable with certain handling such as grooming an medical handling. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Happy's previous owner states that he will escalate to lunging, hard barking, and baring teeth when people approach. It is important to move slowly with Happy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Strength/leash pulling: Happy is reported to lunge at small animals, large dogs and moving objects such as cars, skateboard and bikes. He is also reported to pull hard on leash. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Happy to check in with his owner when he sees his triggers. A front clip harness should help wit his pulling. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration and Strength/leash pulling.
