Hello, my name is Twixie. My animal id is #258070. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/25/2026.
Twixie has been placed on the at risk list for medical reasons. She has developed a severe upper respiratory infection that has caused many days of anorexia and weakness. She needs nursing care and a low stress place to convalesce.

S: URI since 7/12 and progressively symptoms getting worse. Currently on no treatment. O: L eye matted shut, thick epiphora OU with visible ulceration of conjunctiva. multiple punctate ulcers over entire surface of tongue. Nasal discharge. Anoreia. KNOWN HISTORY:: Twixie was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. She was found with another cat trapped on a scaffold.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/3/26 Vol. In cubby, looking out through entry - round eyes but head resting on entryway. Put treat bowl on shelf, ignored, staring, ears slightly turned. Ignored hard treat on tool. Came through cubby with scratcher tool, she sat erect and twisted but allowed head scratches, uncomfortable and ears sideways. Gave two scratches and ended interaction 7/5/26 Vol. Twixie was in the top cubby, and she looked exactly like the worried cat picture on the Level 3 Sticker chart. She was wide-eyed, and her whiskers were fanned out. I talked to her, and she kept her eyes laser focused on me, never returning a slow blink. I did not try to pet her. 7/7/26 FB73 Twixie is laying in the back of her top cubby, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and body tense as the handler approaches. When the cubby door is opened, she remains tense. She is tolerant of some petting with the scratcher tool but does not engage, remaining tense and wide-eyed throughout the interaction. 7/10/26 Vol. In top cubby, by front, looking down with big eyes. Put treat bowl on shelf by cubby entry, Twixie remained crouched, pulling back further. Approached entry with hard treat on tool - no reaction. Opened cubby door to approach with hard treat on tool. Her ears started to go sideways, eyes round, - gave one sniff of tool and pulled back erect, lip licking. Dropped treat and approached with tool. Twixie reared back, eyes huge, tense. Let tool rest, removed and ended interaction. 7/12/26 FB73 Twixie is laying in her litter box, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and very tense as the cubby door is opened. Treats are offered and she is softly spoken to, but she does not respond to them. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, her ears go back slightly and she begins lip licking. Interaction is ended to reduce stress.

Potential challenges comments:: Twixie should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water. Interact with her in this room until she seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce her to the next part of the home without running the risk that she will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Twixie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Twixie was sitting behind her litter box with dilated eyes, low, forward ears and her tail wrapped around her legs. She showed no interest in the treats offered to her, instead keeping her eyes on the handler. She allowed pets along her head and back with the click stick, remaining calm. When adding slight pressure to her chest and side to simulate pick up, she tensed and let out a hiss. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. Twixie tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
