Animal Profile

Honeydew

Hello, my name is Honeydew. My animal id is #216914. I am a desexed female rust dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 12/7/2025.

Honeydew is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in her previous home. In her previous home, Honeydew has shown fear-based reactivity toward unfamiliar people, including barking and growling from a distance and retreating or hiding. During a recent incident, she startled and snapped at a roommate’s leg, making brief contact without breaking skin, then fled and hid. In the care center, Honeydew is social and playful with staff. Medically, Honeydew is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home without cats or small animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/15/25 Honey Dew is introduced to an unfamiliar male dog while off leash at the care center. Honey Dew will approach the gate with a loose frame and wagging tail. She is moved to the back of her pen in order to allow the male dog inside. She approaches the male dog to sniff him while displaying a soft frame, transitioning to using her paws to make contact with him. He runs away soliciting chase play and Honey Dew will chase him around. Honey Dew becomes frustrated, grumbling and also being mouthy with the male dog. Both dogs are separated. Honey Dew will return to the gate with a loose body but doesn't shake off. She is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 10/09/25 Honey Dew is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Honey Dew approaches the gate with a soft body while displaying paw raises as the male dog begins reacting towards her. Honey Dew will move away from the gate, practicing avoidance, maintaining her distance. This concludes the interaction. 09/25/25 Due to being under the weather, Honey Dew could not attend PG and must be revisited at a later date.

Summary (3):: 2/1/26: Honeydew is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and is brought out of her kennel close to the wall so she does not pull towards other kennels but will pull into the room briefly before exiting. She will pull moderately to the behavior office, jumping up on her hindlegs as she pulls. Once in the office, her collar is clipped to a drag leash and she will immediately begin to interact with the enrichment that had been set out previously. She will toggle back and forth between playing with toys and interacting with the snuffle mats. The handler will roll up some toys into a towel and Honeydew will sit down next to them while they do so. Once the handler hands her the towel she will remove the toys one by one and carry them around the room, squeaking them. After a while, she is switched back to the slip leash and returned to her kennel with no issue.

Summary (4):: 01/25/26 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She was easily leashed and pulled to the training room, walking on her hind legs. Honeydew pulls towards the crates and is easily redirected with leash pressure. When inside the training room, Honeydew was clipped t a drag leash and began some polite exchange. At first, Honeydew would jump to try and grab the toy out of the handler's hand. The handler continued work on an out cue. Honeydew would drop the toy on cue and be rewarded with another. The handler began to condition a sit on approach and Honeydew can drop the toy and sit and wait for another. The handler was able to build a three second duration onto Honeydew's sit. Honeydew was easily leashed and returned to her kennel. 01/18/26 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is jumping at her kennel door as the handler approaches. She will try to push her way out of the kennel as the handler leashes her. Honeydew will attempt to kennel fight when moving through meet and greet and the handler keeps her moving and gets her into the training room. When inside, Honeydew immediately shakes and is clipped to a drag leash. The handler begins to play some polite exchange with Honeydew and she is much more focused than previous sessions. Honeydew will exchange 3-4 times before taking a break on the sofa. The handler began to condition a sit on approach when waiting for a new toy, at one point Honeydew jumps and takes the toy out of the handler's hand. After several more successful repetitions, the handler ends the session and Honey dew is walked through the corridors and returned to kennel without issue. 1/11/26: Honeydew is curled up on her kuranda bed with her head up and looking out the door as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and she will come out of the kennel quickly and pull towards kennels as she is quickly removed from the room. Outside, she will engage with the handler and check in often for treats. She will pull moderately throughout most of the walk, pulling hard towards pigeons on the sidewalk. She will attempt to pull towards the kennels beside hers as they enter the room but is quickly returned to her kennel with no issue. 1/4/25: Honeydew is at the front of her kennel laying down on the ground. Her pupils are dilated as she is focused on the kennel next to hers. She is leashed with ease and will pull towards the kennels next to hers but is removed from the room quickly. While on the slip leash, Honeydew pulls hard and is panting heavily so the handler clips the leash to her collar so she can have more room to explore and she will loosen up as the walk progresses. The handler will cue her with a kissy noise for check ins, which she will start offering on her own throughout the walk, occasionally leaning in to petting after taking a treat. She will then continue exploring. Honeydew will then pull hard into the shelter and is returned to her kennel with no issue.

Summary (5):: 01/02/26 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is at the front of her kennel with a loose body and mild pant as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. The handler works with her on polite exchange, throwing a toy each time Honeydew drops her current one, and Honeydew participates with interest. Each time she runs to the couch and jumps up, waiting for the handler to approach with the other toy. When they do the other toy is thrown and the initial toy is picked up. She leans into contact with a loose wiggly body and is returned to kennel without issue. 12/28/25: Honeydew is at the front of her kennel laying on the ground, licking the corner of her kennel. The handler opens the door and Honeydew gets up and comes to the front and she is leashed with ease. She will pull hard towards the other kennels in the room but is easily removed from the room. She is taken on a walk and will pull hard. The handler slips their leash to her collar so she can utilize the full length of the leash as she explores. She will sniff around and will occasionally watch dogs as they walk past but does not pull towards them as long as she is at a distance. After the walk, she is returned to her kennel with no issue. 12/23/25 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the training room. When inside, she is clipped to a drag leash and immediately picks up a toy. Honeydew and the handler will engage in multiple round of polite exchange. Honeydew will jump at the handler for the toy on several occasions, and the handler begins to build a sit on approach with her. Honeydew is able to drop a toy at the handler's feet and will sit and wait for a new one, with increasing duration. Honeydew opts out of PE and the handler begins some doggie zen, to continue work on her impulse control. Honeydew is able to leave a closed palm of treats with ease Honey dew is easily leashed and returned to kennel. 12/20/25 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is standing on the door of her kennel barking as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. The handler works with her on polite exchange, trading one toy for another, and she participates readily. She leans into contact with a loose body and is returned to kennel without issue. 12/12: Honeydew was observed to grab her crate when dogs are taken out for walks. Throughout the day, she hard barks at staff and other dogs walking past her crate.

Summary (6):: 12/09/25 (Assessment): Honeydew is laying in the center of her crate as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and is walked into the behavior office. She is clipped to a drag leash and is free to roam around the room. She is loose and social with the handlers. After the assessment Honeydew will hop onto the couch with the toy. She is then returned to her crate and secured safely. (See assessment for more information) 12/09/25: Honeydew is lying down in her kennel and gets up as the handler approaches, displaying a loose, wiggly body and allowing leashing with ease. She is escorted to the live room for enrichment, where she allows placement of a collar and drag leash. The handler offers a snuffle mat filled with treats, which Honeydew engages with eagerly until all treats are located. She then begins playing with squeaky toys on the floor. Honeydew eventually lies down with a squeaky toy in her mouth, squeezing it repeatedly to self regulate. When the session is complete, Honeydew is brought back to her kennel safely without any issues. 11/17: Honeydew is seen pawing and licking at the bottom of her kennel door. She is lying down as she does this. When she pauses from licking, Honeydew pants heavily, then wails briefly, then returns to licking. The handler sees an empty food tray a few inches outside of her kennel door. The handler picks it up in case this was what was stressing Honeydew. When they return to finish cleaning the kennel next to her, she is still repeating the aforementioned behaviors. The handler offers her some treats to redirect her focus. She does eat them. 11/14/25 (Trainer Note): Honeydew's behavior remains the same as 11/07/25. 11/07/25 (Trainer Note): Honeydew is standing on the door of her kennel panting moderately as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. The handler works with her on polite exchange and she trades readily. However, Honeydew is only willing to trade if she sees the toy or hears a squeaker. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Honeydew engages with interest. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 10/19/25: Honeydew is standing at the front of her kennel, jumping onto the door as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and will pull hard to the live room. She is clipped to a drag leash and will engage with the handler in learning a hand target. After a few times, a treat is tossed away to give Honeydew the chance to opt back in to the hand target. She will opt for two more rounds but the last time, she chooses to engage with a stuffed toy that is in the room. Honeydew is switched from her drag leash to the slip leash and returned to her kennel with no issue. 10/12/25: Honeydew is laying on the ground in her kennel as the handler approaches. She will get up and stand at the door with a neutral frame as the handler opens the door. She is leashed with ease and will pull moderately out of the kennel room, pulling towards the kennels as they pass them. Honeydew will sniff briefly around the trees but will pull mildly as they are on the sidewalk. She passes multiple dogs, pulling towards them with consistent pressure but not vocalizing. Her body is tense and she will not take treats at anytime during the walk. As the handler and Honeydew reach a quiet spot on their walk, the handler will crouch down and coax Honeydew over to them with babytalk. She comes over with a curved body and will lean in for pets. Honeydew will walk ahead of the handler on a loose leash the rest of the walk but begins to pull moderately once inside of the Care Center. She is secured safely in her kennel after she enters with no issue. 10/07/25 Honey dew is sitting in front of her kennel door remaining still. She is easily leashed and taken to the play pens. Honeydew maintains a still frame trotting alongside the handler in a relaxed pace. Honey dew will enter the pen and have a drag leash placed onto her, allowing her to free roam. Honeydew will explore the pen, collect treats from the ground as well as find toys to play with. At one point, her and the handler play fetch. Honeydew collects treats gently from the handler as they are administered, catching them when tossed as well. She is returned to the facility where she enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 10/02/25: ACS Staff report that Honeydew is barking and lunging at other dogs, biting the bars of her kennel, and pulling the crate cover into the kennel.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted during Honeydew's handling assessment, as she was observed to become tense while gripping the toy and body blocking from the prop hand snap when engaged with a toy. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Honeydew's possession without safely trading for an item of greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Honeydew jumped up throughout her assessment, including when seeking petting or treats. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Bite history (human): There was one reported incident involving Honeydew. The prior owner stated that their roommate entered the home carrying a pile of packages, which they believe startled Honeydew. In response, she snapped at the roommate’s right shin. They described the snap as a quick nip, confirmed that no skin was broken, and noted that Honeydew was off her Trazodone at the time. Immediately afterward, Honeydew ran away and hid. The prior owner noted that Honeydew becomes nervous when their roommate enters the home and will bark or growl at them, but always from a distance and while remaining hidden. Anxiety: Honeydew is noted to have anxiety.Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Barrier frustration: Honeydew is noted to hard bark and lunge at the front of her crate when novel dogs walk past. This indicates a need for desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to help her remain calm and composed in situations where she is separated by barriers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash biting: Honeydew is quick to grab the leash in her mouth during the jog portion of her assessment. She displayed similar behaviors during her assessment from her prior stay. We recommend walking her with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grab the leash. Please see handout on arousal.
