Animal Profile

Mochi Moo Moo

Hello, my name is Mochi Moo Moo. My animal id is #233721. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/6/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Mochi Moo Moo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Despite our best efforts Mochi has been observed to be highly stressed while in care. Noted to be jumping up and down persistently while in kennel and barking towards the neighboring dog. Mochi has also been observed to bang and pounce on the transfer door relatedly. During one instance Mochi was observed to pull towards the neighboring dogs while barking and vocalizing. When the handler pulled him away Mochi began to head whip and attempted to spin towards the handler. While outside with handlers Mochi is observed to be tense with a low tail. Medically, Mochi Moo Moo is apparently healthy.

I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Mochi is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and the potential for redirection we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to his on leash reactivity observed while in care we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Mochi's previous owner states that he is fearful when startled and will attempt to hide from loud noises while on walks. Mochi has been observed to have a tense body and low tail. When handlers attempt to interact Mochi has been observed to show whale eye, lip lick, seek exit, and retreat from handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Mochi the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Mochi would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Mochi's previous owner states that he has general anxiety and will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety and General Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Mochi has been observed to pull towards the neighboring dogs while barking and vocalizing. When the handler pulled him away he began to head whip and attempted to spin towards them. Mochi will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
