Animal Profile

Kicks

Hello, my name is Kicks. My animal id is #222966. I am a desexed female tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.

Kicks is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Kicks tries to make herself heard, but isn't the type to make a big fuss. Eschewing hisses and grumbles for freezing in place or simply trying to flee when we offer our friendship, we can't say Kicks is a happy kitty at the shelter, but of course we'll keep trying to build bridges to meet Kicks where she is. She came to us from a home with many other cats and while she may very well be the independent type, she also maybe hasn't had so many opportunities to meet new people. Spending time with Kicks often requires just a teensy bit of extra patience, but making a new friend with her will always be worth it.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Kicks was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. She lived in a home with many other cats. Upon intake, Kicks had a tense body and would not move at all to be transferred. She was not aggressive in any way, just very fearful. Not treat motivated. Did not handle nor MC scanning due to behavior.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/26/25 VA When reaching close or handling the cat for spay surgery, she may remain frozen and then suddenly and quickly attempts to flee away. She does not display defensive behavior such as hissing, growling, or swatting at the handler. She is very fearful of humans. 3/27/25 LVT After one day of recovering from surgery, Kicks was moved to the Cat Holding room. She displayed the same fleeing behavior as yesterday, and eventually had to be sedated to be handled and transported to her new kennel. 3/28/25 Vol. She was on top of the hidey box, in a sort of crouch tense, eyes round, ears forward, head up. Put in squeeze treat bowl - no reaction, just alert on top of box. Just stood by open door sweet talking, she did not run away. Put in Feliway square when everyone walked away from cage. 4/2/25 Vol. Kicks was inside den facing away from the opening. She poked her head out to sniff at squeeze up, but did not eat. Her eyes were wide and dilated. When offered a feather toy, she darted out and went to other side of her double kennel. Over there, she remained frozen in place in a crouch, and her body was visibly trembling. Offered her a few slow blinks and ended interaction due to high FAS. 4/6/25 Vol. Hiding in den, out of sight. But while changing the litter box, came out and peeked through the portal between sides of the kennel, tense and frozen, then sat at the front of the kennel behind the privacy cover. When I tossed in a few treats, fled to den again. Did not investigate a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up on the tool, remained out of sight in the den. But as soon as I walked away, came out again and peered through the portal between kennels with dilated eyes. Followed the laser pointer and a feather toy, but didn't move to play with them. Sniffed the feather toy when it got close to her, then retreated to lie on top of den. Has potential! 4/8/25 Vol. Sitting on top of her den with flat ears and wide, dilated eyes. She hissed and then ran to the other half of her double den. No interest in Squeeze-ups or tune. Ignored laser. 4/14/25 FB32 Sitting up at front of den with tense body, wide eyes, and ears tilted, then retreats to the back of the kennel when spoken to and opening the door. She ignores treats offered on the tool and stress meows when pet. After opening up the portal door, she retreats to the other side and hides in the den.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Kicks is an adult cat who may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kicks was crouched on her bedding, watching from a distance with wide eyes and a blank stare as the assessor approached. Her ears were erect and forward. She allowed chin scratches and petting along her head with a scratcher tool, responding to a slow approach. However, she remained immobile and breathed heavily in place. The assessment was ended early to reduce her stress. Kicks tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
