Mushu
Hello, my name is Mushu. My animal id is #223070. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/25/2025.
Mushu is at risk due to behavior concerns. While he can be social and responsive with familiar handlers, Mushu frequently retreats to the back of his kennel, dodges the leash, or requires treat luring to be removed from his kennel. He has made progress with muzzle training, often placing his face in the muzzle and allowing brief strapping, though he can become avoidant if not properly reinforced. Mushu has exhibited concerning behaviors such as grabbing at a staff member during a walk and intermittent leash biting, where he would pull staff/handlers' leads to the back of his kennel. On walks, he tends to pull strongly, jump on handlers for treats, and show difficulty managing arousal, especially around other dogs. Medically, Mushu has dermatitis.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Mushu entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/22/25 Mushu is introduced face-to-face to a female greeter dog while on-leash at the care center. Mush will enter the room where the greeter dog is, immediately perking up, displaying a still posture. The greeter dog is lying down in appeasement. Mushu slowly makes his way over to her, calmly scenting her muzzle will a high-fast wagging tail and the greeter dog remains soft, allowing it. Mushu eyes widen and he becomes fixated on her, following her around the room, trying to get into position to mount. Mushu appears sexually motivated as he stands on his tiptoes attempting to appear bigger, hyper-salivating, and licking the greeter dog's genitals. Mushu will stand directly parallel to the greeter dog, attempting to mount but is pull away by the handler while the greeter dog is moved away. Mushu is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 05/14/25 Mushu is introduced to a Male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Mushu will approach the gate with a soft frame. Mushu appears nervous, displaying a knot in their tail. Mushu will not look at the greeter dog, looking past them at the handler in the greeter dog's pen. Mushu will attempt to solicit the handler's attention and will proceed to displace, scenting away from the gate. Mushu is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 04/02/25 Mushu is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Mushu doesn't approach the gate initially, appearing nervous as he displays paw raises from a distance. As Mushu slowly approaches the gate, he lip licks excessively. Mushu gradually becomes stiff as the greeter dog attempts to solicit his attention. Mushu will bare his teeth at her as she offers play bows and Mushu is moved away from the gate. At this point, he maintains his distance from the gate. Mushu is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (2):: 7/22/25: Mushu was resting in kennel as handler approached. He came forward when offered treats but would retreat from the leash loop. Handler called him to them and clipped leash to collar. They walked to the yard via the staircase. Mushu was social with handler and frequently solicited treats which he took gently. Mushu would often linger around handler and their treat pouch when he wanted another treat. He was disinterested in toys and spent time scenting. He briefly mouthed the slip leash as it was placed over head. He exited the pen and walked back to kennel without issue.
Summary (3):: 07/19/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is laying down at the back of his kennel as the handler approaches. He follows a treat lure through the leash and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He eagerly places his face in the muzzle and allows the handler to put the straps around the back of his head and clip it. The muzzle is too large so handler removes it. Mushu allows this process to repeat several times until it fits correctly. Handler then takes him for a walk outside where Mushu maintains a loose body and does not attempt to remove the muzzle. He is brought back to the canine training room where the muzzle is removed before being returned to kennel without issue. 07/10/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He follows a treat through the leash and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He readily places his face in the muzzle and allows the handler to put the straps around the back of his head and clip it briefly. Handler puts the muzzle away and switches to leave it with Mushu. He engages readily. Mushu is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 7/8 (PM): A handler enters the room and sees a staff member attempting unsuccessfully to leash Mushu due to him running to the back of his kennel and dodging the lead. The handler drops a handful of treats into the kennel and the staff member is able to leash him while he is eating the treats. 07/03/25 (Trainer Note) Mushu is standing at the front f his kennel as the handler approaches, he is easily leashed using a treat and walks calmly to the Live Room. When inside, Mushu is clipped to a drag leash and begins to pace around the room. Mushu and the handler play the up down game and Mushu begins to calm a bit. The handler begins some muzzle training with Mushu and Mushu will readily put his snout in the muzzle for spray cheese. After multiple repetitions, the handler attempts to put one strap behind Mushu's head and Mushu backs away. The handler gives Mushu a break and begins work on the leave it cue. Mushu can leave treats on the verbal cue "leave it" and be rewarded with a higher value treat. The handler presents the lead to Mushu and he immediate hops backwards and play bows to dodge the leash. The handler uses a treat and Mushu is easily leashed and safely returned to his kennel
Summary (4):: 7/2: ACS staff were unable to leash Mushu for a walk due to him runniing to the back of his kennel while dodging the lead. A handler approaches and drops treats in but he would run forward, grab pieces, and then return to the back his kennel. He does this repeatedly until the handler holds the treat in their hand and he pauses to try and take the treat while the ACS leashes him. 06/28/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He follows a treat lure through the leash and pulls moderately to a canine training room. He is loose and social with staff and leans into contact. Mushu readily places his face into the muzzle and takes reinforcement. He continues to take treats and allows the handler to clip the straps. Mushu stands still and drops his head when he realizes the muzzle is clipped. The handler begins to reinforce him for not attempting to remove it and he is able to focus on the treats. Handler removes the muzzle after approximately a minute before returning Mushu to kennel without issue. 06/18/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He accepts a treat lure through the leash and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Mushu is loose and social with staff, leaning into contact. He readily puts his face into the muzzle without a lure and allows the handler to move the straps. He does not allow the handler to clip the muzzle due to a lack of spray cheese, backing out of the muzzle as the handler attempts. He shows no interest in peanut butter or other lickable alternatives. Mushu does continue to readily put his face in the muzzle and hold it for short durations before being reinforced. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately back to his kennel. 06/15/25 Mushu is at the front of his kennel standing neutrally as the handler approaches. The handler will administer Mushu a toy in which he doesn't want, so the handler administers him treats in which he takes moderately. Mushu is leashed while collecting treats from the handler and is taken outside for a walk. Mushu will exuberantly pull his way out of the kennel room along with pulling his way out of the building. Mushu continues to pull, displaying a loose frame. Mushu will jump onto the handler soliciting treats and the handler must toss treats to create space. The handler will work on Mushu's impulses with treats, tossing them away from the handler and having him "stay" at arm's length before he can come forward. Mushu is returned to the facility where he will pull his way back to the facility and attempt to pull in the direction of a dog with a novel handler. Mushu will enter the building as well as his kennel quickly. 6/13/25: Mushu was reported to grab an ACS knee twice on a walk unprompted. The ACS was able to stiff arm him and walk him back to kennel.
Summary (5):: 06/13/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is standing at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed with a treat lure and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Mushu is loose and social with staff and readily engages with the muzzle, putting his face in and allowing the handler to secure the straps. He continued to take treats while wearing the muzzle though he did attempt to paw at it once. The handler continued to reinforce him for wearing it and then removed it without issue. Mushu was allowed to engage with a snuffle mat for a few moments before being returned to kennel without issue. 6/8: A handler passes and sees an ACS having some difficulty leashing Mushu due to him dodging the leash and running to the back of his kennel. The handler feeds Mushu treats while the ACS attempts to leash him. He snatches a large piece and then runs to the back of his kennel again. But with more treats, he is successfully leashed and proceeds on his walk. 6/6/25: Mushu did a play bow before approaching kennel door. He was mildly mouthing toward leash by novel handler (employee in training). Used treat lure Mushu was able to get on lead on first attempt. Mushu was relaxed while clipping on drag-line. He was soliciting for petting and attention for other team members in behavior room. Mushu investigated environment, very focused on scavenging for food. Mushu was doing well with muzzle conditioning, taking squeeze cheese through standard muzzle (not larger ‘training’ muzzle used previously) from trainer. Handler used treat lure to get slip lead back on, first attempt successful. Mushu re-entered kennel without issue. 05/31/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is sitting in his kennel as the handler approaches. He initially moves away from the leash, but follows a lure through. Mushu pulls moderately to the canine training room and allows the handler to attach a drag leash. He engages readily with the muzzle, holding his face in for several seconds at a time. He allows the handler to secure the straps behind his head and wears the muzzle for approximately 30 seconds before the handler removes it. Mushu then plays two toy fetch with the handler and jumps up on them to solicit contact. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 05/29/25 Mushu is lying down in his karanda bed when the handler approaches. Mushu is leashed with ease and taken outside for a walk. Mushu will display a loose frame as he jumps playfully onto the handler. He will allow petting, leaning in for chin rubs. Mushu will take treats extremely gently, sitting willingly when soliciting treats. Mushu and the handler will go for lengthy walk where Mush will gradually slow his pace down, trotting alongside the handler. Mushu will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 5/25: ACS staff report having difficulty leashing Mushu due to him leash biting and pulling it into kennel. 05/23/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is sitting in his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Mushu is loose and social with staff, running around the room with a soft body. Handler works with him on holding his face in the muzzle for a longer window. Once he does so, handler begins to move the straps and allow Mushu to acclimate to them. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 05/15/25 (Trainer Note): Mushu is sitting in his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately towards the canine training room. Mushu is loose and social, allowing the handler to attach a drag leash and running around the room. Mushu is quick to use his front paws, placing them on handler's legs or jumping up onto staff. Handler works with him on interacting with the muzzle and then putting his face into it. Mushu becomes mouthy when he gets confused and puts the handler's entire hand into his mouth though he applies no pressure. Mushu then begins to corncob on the handler's arm before being redirected to the muzzle. Handler intermittently throws treats away from the muzzle to break up the session and Mushu does not display any more mouthiness. Mushu is sticking his nose into the muzzle with a lure and holding it for a few seconds when the handler ends the session. Mushu is returned to kennel without issue. 05/14/25: Mushu is lying down in his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once in the yard, Mushu is fitted with a drag leash and does a nose-to-nose greeting at the gate. Mushu sniffs but presents with a lowered tail, appears fearful, and does not show interest in interacting with his playmate. See Dog to Dog note for more information. 5/10/25: Mushu is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, and is a bit weary of the leash reported by staff so he is clipped by his collar. Mushu pulls out of the kennel and is panting heavily, but once outside is able to explore his surroundings and pull less. Mushu is social with staff, eating from the handler but only when dropping onto the floor, but appears conflicted moving away at times. Mushu is brought back to kennel with no issue. 5/5 (PM) Mushu has reportedly been biting/chewing on either side of his transfer door. Teeth marks can be seen on both sides.
Summary (7):: 05/05/25 Mushu is lying down as the handler approaches. Mushu will back into his kennel, a bit weary but will take treat from the handler when administered. Mushu is leashed as the lead is lightly placed onto Mushu. They proceed outside for a walk. Mushu will display a still, neutral frame while walking moderately beside the handler. Mushu will attempt to scavenge on his walk but the handler will administer him treats instead, keeping him away from all garbage. Mushu and the handler will commence their walk as he remains neutral. Mushu will allow handling as the handler pets him. Mushu will return to the facility entering the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 5/1/25: ACS staff report Mushu is reported to scavenge on walks, eating the wood mulch and anything on the ground on walks. 4/28/25: Mushu was laying down when handler approached. He retreated through his transfer door before re-approaching to be leashed. Mushu swatted at the leash a number of times. He exited kennel willingly and walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Mushu frequently searched the ground for anything he could eat. He engaged in fetch with handler and readily ate treats. Mushu would demand bark (while standing or in a play bow) at handler when they were not paying him attention or treats. Mushu mouthed at handler's phone but was easily redirected with toys. Mushu walked back to kennel and climbed in after a handful of treats. 04/21/25: Mushu is lying in the middle of kennel sleeping as handler approaches. He wakes as handler cracks open the kennel door and will retreat to the other side of kennel as handler presents the lead. He is easily coaxed forward with treats and walks with a loose leash to the Canine Behavior Office. Mushu is social with handlers throughout and will allow petting with a neutral frame. He does get a bit demanding for treats and will nip at handler's sleeve and hand. Handler offers him a snuffle mat and puzzle feeder which he will engage with for several minutes. After his session, he is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely. 4/7/25: Mushu is at the back of his kennel laying down when the handler approaches, and when approached begins to shy away from the leash initially, but after treats are tossed on the floor and as he is eating them, he is leashed with ease and brought out for a quick street walk. Mushu is a bit reluctant to walk up the steps, but explores his surroundings and does approach when cajoled on the sidewalk. Mushu is taken for a shorter walk due to the rain and is walked back to kennel where treats are tossed to get him into kennel. *OLDER ENRICHMENT NOTES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST*
Date of intake:: 3/25/2025
Summary:: soft with staff, barking at dog on leash
Date of initial:: 3/26/2025
Summary:: Some whale eye/tucked tail. Started relaxing after being offered treats
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mushu so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Mushu's fearfulness in care, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Mushu is noted to become mouthy with handlers, mouthing the handler's arm and hands. Fearful: Mushu is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Mushu the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mushu should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mushu’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mushu would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Mushi has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. Duke may need positive reinforcement and reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front-clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Low Threshold for Arousal | Leash Biting: Mushu has been reported to intermittently become aroused and start biting the leash when attempting to remove him from his kennel. Handlers are able to refocus him and leash him using treats. Please see handout on Arousal.
