Animal Profile

Ocho

Hello, my name is Ocho. My animal id is #255081. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/21/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Ocho is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Ocho was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. She is thought to have lived with 50+ other cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/02/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face hidden from view. She pokes his head out slightly to watch me as I offer treats and a catnip toy and she growls in response. I do not push petting today. Hopefully she explores the offerings later when he feels more safe... 6/3/26 FB25 Ocho is on top of her den. She is crouched with with eyes and and neutral ears, her body tense. I place treats down and she looks at them but doesn't move. When I place the scratcher tool inside, after a few minutes of sniffing, she begins tapping it lightly. When I pull it away, she hops down from the den and approaches me. I move it back and forth and she continues to track it, tap it lightly and sniff. I retrieve a wand toy and when I wave it from the top of the kennel, she begins playing! She grabs at it and even rolls around exposing her belly as she plays and tugs on it. A few times she looks intently at my fingers on the kennel door, but her attention is easily redirected to the toy. I give her a variety of small toys and she taps at them curiously. When I exit, she's still at the front of the kennel. Yay playing! 6/6/26 FB25 She is inside of her den out of sight. When I open the kennel, she peaks her head out halfway, looking at me intently. She has wide eyes but her pupils are normal sized, and her ears are neutral. I slow blink at her and she returns one. She yawns and then sits upright and begins grooming herself in the den. I use the scratcher tool to push a tray of squeeze up to the den opening. She leans her head out to sniff it, appearing as if she's about to eat, but stops and watches me, then retreats. I offer the wand toy she enjoyed last time and she tracks it with her eyes but remains in the den. I put some squeeze up on the scratcher and offer that. She sniffs it and then leans her head out of the kennel to sniff up the metal rod. She then retreats but continues peaking out at me. She seems curious. 6/8/26 FB79 At the top of the den, Ocho has a neutral face and body when i entered the kennel, she leaned in to sniff the treats that i tossed in and tolerated petting on her head with the tool which she ate! However the more i pet down and around her body she leaned away to avoid contact. I left her some more treats and a toy! 6/12/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Ocho peaked his head out when i entered and had wide eyes with forward ears. When i used the tool he leaned in to sniff but started to hiss when i attempted contact; Ocho didnt tolerate any petting and leaned in to bite the tool. I tried to use a wand toy to coax him out he remained put in the den as his eyes widened and focused on the tool. 6/22/26 FB79 I entered the kennel and Ocho was inside of the den peaking out with wide eyes and forward ears; she had no reaction to me and leaned in as i slide a tray of treats near her. She started to enjoy and i was about to attempt contact she looked up and pulled away almost fully entering the kennel. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Ocho came from a home with about 50+ other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Other,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Ocho would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. Ocho may benefit from being in a home with another, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom she can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help her gain confidence and comfort in a new environment

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/28/26 On approach, Ocho is sitting with a tense face and body, hunched next to her den with eyes wide and extremely dilated, ears tilted. When the assessor kneels down to open the cage door, she quickly jumps up onto the shelf. Once the cage door is opened and the assessor slowly offers the scratcher tool out, she quickly looks around as if to flee. While the assessor is able to make contact with the tool, Ocho is consistently shifting around and attempting to avoid contact with a low body and tail low/tucked, ears tilted, and pupils blown wide. When the Assess-A-Hand is introduced, she escalates and swats the hand before she begins to flee consistently around the cage while low growling with her tail pilo-erect and ears tilted flat. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended due to the very high level of FAS she presents. 6/28/26 Upon approach, Ocho is sitting inside of her den in a resting position. She has a neutral expression and watches intently as the assessor open the door. When the scratcher tool is slowly moved in, she sniffs it curiously, then moves away when it nears her head. She tolerates it as it is run over her head and along her back, however continues to try and move away from the touch, flinching her entire body with each stroke. Her eyes become wider and her tail wraps tightly around her legs, now sitting upright. When the scratcher is pulled out, she swats at it, trapping it against the den for a moment. She then comes out of her den and flees to the top shelf ledge. When the assessor closes the door, she comes forward after a few moments to eat the treats left near the front of the kennel. She allows the assessor near and remains calm as long as the door remains closed between them. Pick up is not attempted as not to increase her FAS. Ocho is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is apprehensive of people and she consistently attempts to flee or avoid human contact, potentially escalating to defensive aggression when pushed or feeling cornered. Ocho is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
