In the Care Centers, Cobby is highly fearful, especially when placed on a slip lead. He was observed to thrash and screech. He allows staff to pick him up but remains anxious in the room. His owner described him as a social, tolerant dog. Medically, Cobby is obese and has otitis externa. Cobby was surrendered to the Care Centers due to landlord and neighbor issues with the previous owners. His previous owners described him as a social and affectionate dog. He can be lazy at times and playful at others. He was reported to bark and growl at strangers. During his stay in care, Cobby has been highly fearful and has avoided walking on a leash with staff. He has baulked on the leash, refused to walk forward, and needed to be carried. He is also noted to be heavily panting, attempting to seek exit while whimpering. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and reevaluate her behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, and surgery performed by offsite vet. Medical record uploaded to Vet Documents. Green linear tattoo placed lateral to incision. GIVE: 1/2 tablet of Rimadyl 75 mg by mouth for 2 days starting the day after surgery. For pain management.

9/3/2026

Due to FAS P was given the following pre-exam anxiolytics: Based on prior weight in shelter: Trazodone 75mg (~10mg/kg) PO Gabapentin 200mg (~20mg/kg) PO P had an AM dose of trazodone that was in kennel uneaten so that was removed prior to placing the new medications inside of kennel. Attempt exam in 1-2 hours

He was easily leashed, scanned, picked up, held, and placed in kennel but refused to walk with staff. His BP was reviewed with the owner and looks good but he was too fearful to walk upon intake. He was also placed with a Please Go Slow With Me tag at his kennel in SDA.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Prefers contact on his own terms but becomes tolerant, playful, friendly, and outgoing once warmed up. Will bark or growl at unfamiliar dogs when on leash and has no off-leash experience

How is this dog around cats?: Barks or growls

Resource guarding:: Considers toys, treats, and food items of high value but the clint never attempted to take the items from him

Other Notes:: Is fearful of loud noises, anxious, and has destructive tendencies. On walks he is reactive towards cats and will attempt to lunge or bark at them. He is fearful when held or restrained but unbothered by being disturbed when sleeping, having his paws touched or collar grabbed. He has never been startled or moved from furniture.

He spends most of his time roaming around his home or following his family around the residence. He allows his family to bathe him, brush him, and trim his nails, barely pulls on his leash during his daily walks and he is not picky with food or treats. He knows the cues sit, stay, and paw.

Summary:: Due to Cobby's refusal to walk and his overall fearfulness, Cobby will not receive a handling assessment.

Summary (7):: 9/7/26: Cobby is siting in his kennel heavy panting as handler approaches. He begins jumping and screeching at the door as the handler unlocks it. He would try to shove his way out of the kennel as the handler attempts to leash him while vocalizing. Once leashed, he launches out of the kennel and begins to quickly thrash. When the handler takes a pause, he then begins to screech an vocalize. The handler then takes a few steps in the opposite direction and is then able to pick him up and carry him to the behavior room. In the room, he would pace around the room while heavy panting and screeching. He would approach the handler and jumps up on them and lean in to receive pets. He is able to be picked up and carried back to his kennel with no issues. 9/3/26: Cobby is sitting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is eager to come out of kennel as the handler quickly leashes him. Once leashed, he then quickly leaps out of kennel and then baulks to ground and refuses to walk forward. He would take a few steps when the handler would bend down and try to coax him with a squeaker and treats. He would then would back away again. A second handler is able to assist by covering him with a towel and he is then slowly picked up and carried to the behavior room. In the room, he has a tense body as he explores around. He is comfortable approaching a few of the handlers and would jump up and begin to whimper while heavy panting. He would then try to seek exit at the door while heavy panting and whimpering. When another handler opens the door, he quickly exits the room and is the taken back to his kennel. He would constantly baulk to the ground along the way. When reaching his kennel, he allows the handler to pick him up and is placed inside. He then quickly jumps out. The handler then picks him up again and is able to quickly close the door after he is inside. He continues to try to get out by shoving his snout at the door as the handler unleashes him and quickly closes and locks the door.

Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Cobby to check in with his adopters when he sees his triggers.
