Kiva
Hello, my name is Kiva. My animal id is #213269. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/5/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Kiva is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He was surrendered to the care center by his owner, who described him as social, affectionate, and playful. Upon intake, Kiva was jumping on staff with force and was mouthy. Additionally, Kiva is observed to be on leash reactive, where he fixates on and barks at dogs in view. Recently, his behavior has escalated, with Kiva being observed jumping towards and mouthing another staff member's ankle. Despite daily enrichment efforts, Kiva is struggling to adjust to the shelter environment. Medically, Kiva recently recovered from CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I have lived with cats. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I am playful and cute! I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary (7):: 11/20/24: It is reported that Kiva barked and fixated on a dog that passed in the garage. Then in the elevator Kiva was observed to sniff, jump towards, and mouth another staff members ankle. When Kiva was pulled away from the other staff member he began barking towards them. 11/16/24: Kiva is at the front with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is walked on the street where he will focus on other dogs and pull hard in their direction. He is not easily redirected and has to be pulled away. When a dog is walking at a distance behind him, he will continue to turn around and stare. He has to be pulled away. When no dogs are present on the walk, Kiva is soft bodied and walks slightly ahead of handler. He will come over when called and is given a treat. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel. 11/12/24: Kiva is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body and alert barking as handler approaches. He is easily leashed using a treat lure and brought out to the pens. He pulls very hard. The gate greet was aborted due to Kiva hard barking, flagging his tail, grumbling, and having a tense body when doing a gate-greet. Handler removes Kiva from pen, and upon going down the stairs into the care centers, Kiva is scrambling and pulling even harder in all directions, attempting to climb back up the stairs. Handler shortened leash hold and brought her back into kennel without issue 11/6/24 (PM): Kiva is standing at the front of the kennel as handler approaches. Handler easily leashes Kiva and walks out to the yard. Kiva pulls mildly on leash and walks around pen. Kiva takes treats softly from the handler but does not eat them; he also shows no interest in toys or squeakers. There are dogs in the next pen and Kiva watches them with a soft body and wagging tail. He allows petting on the head, body, and sides from the handler and jumps on the handlers lap. Kiva is brought back to the kennel and returned without issue. 11/6/24: Kiva is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats which he takes with moderate pressure before handler attempts to leash him. He will jump up at the kennel bars as well as on handlers arm when being leashed, occasionally becoming tangled in the leash. He is leashed after a bit and taken to the street for his walk. Once outside he pulls moderately and walks past people without issue. Kiva uses the bathroom outside but when seeing dogs will slightly stiffen and attempt to pull towards them. He is walked around the street for a while before being brought back and returned to kennel without issue.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners: Kiva is reported by the owner to jump up frequently with strangers and children. This is also observed in the care center as Kiva jumped on staff with force and was mouthy. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Touch Sensitivity/ Bite history(human): Owner reported that Kiva has bitten once before when a family member would get in the dogs face and continuously poking and pull on the dogs tail. Kiva snapped and the bite was a bite and release. The location of the bite was not specified. Please see hand out on Bite history(human). Anxiety: Owner reported that Kiva has general anxiety. If Kiva displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Kiva's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards dogs, skateboards. Kiva will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
