He is currently not comfortable with handling and will escalate to clear warning behaviors when overwhelmed, so he needs a slow, respectful approach and plenty of space. He has shown strong interest in food, which may help build trust over time. With patience, consistency, and experienced handling, Ashen has the potential to make progress as he begins to feel safer.

Summary (7):: 4/26 Glo is at the front of his kennel with a soft open mouth, a loose body, a wiggly butt and a wagging tail. Glo is easily roped and taken for a walk. On the walk Glo has a loose body and pulls a moderate amount. When at the end of the block Glo jumps up on staff, putting his paws on the staff members shoulders. Glo had a loose body while doing this and corrected themself. They did not jump up again during the rest of the walk. Glo allowed their leash to be clipped and accepted gentle head pets. They easily walked into their kennel. 4/23 Afternoon- Glo is at the front of his kennel and barks once at staff as they approach. He is given some treats, which he accepts. He stands still with a neutral body and allows staff to leash him. He walks out of the Kennel with a neutral body, pulling moderately hard on the leash. Glo is brought to a yard and kept on leash. He explores the yard and maintains a neutral body. He sniffs at but does not accept any treats given outside. Glo is taken for a walk around the shelter perimeter. During his walk, he pulls a moderate amount, causing him to cough a few times. He stops and smells plants in the scent garden, maintaining his neutral body. He stares at, but otherwise ignores other people he sees during his walk. He allows his leash to be clipped, and when being returned to his kennel, he balks and stands at the open kennel for a moment before walking in on his own. 4/23: AM Glo is lying neutral in the middle of his kennel. He remains quiet and relaxed on approach. Treats are tossed and he eats them. He is handed a large milk bone and takes it gently from staff member's hand. 4/22: Glo is standing neutral with his blocker up as staff enters the room. He engages in an up/down game, consistently eating treats tossed and lifting his head when finished. When the handler moves to get up, he hard barks and lunges. 4/21: Glo is hard barking and baring teeth, staring at staff member as they sit in front of his kennel. They avoid eye contact and begin rolling sausages into his kennel. He eats them off the floor and will begin to bark intermittently. Some pieces of sausage are outside of his kennel he attempts to lick them off the floor. A tray is used to push them back in he bites the tray and shakes as it enters his kennel. After a few more high-value treats are offered, he is willing to take them directly from the staff. He begins barking as staff walk away. 4.19.26 Glo is lying down at the back of the kennel when approached. He stares at the staff briefly before alert barking and moving to the front of the kennel. He low growls as staff walks away.

Date of initial:: 4/16/2026

Summary:: hard barking, required sedation

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13) Due to behavior seen at the care center we feel that Glo would do best in an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner Glo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION Glo has escalated to growling and lunging on multiple occasions both at intake and during his time in the care center. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Glo should never be forced to interact, he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach, and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Glo. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Ashen's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearfulness/potential for defensive aggression.
