Animal Profile

Sunshine

Hello, my name is Sunshine. My animal id is #219207. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender - good samaritan on 1/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as snr request.

Sunshine is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Sunshine had been living in a wall for a while. Yes, a wall and since November to be exact. She was brought to us in January, which means she had quite a bit of time on her own. This is hardly the smooth start we would've wished for Sunshine, but she knows it doesn't define her. It could possibly inform her because what to make of the Care Center now, however, seems to elude dear Sunshine. Prefering to pass the days from the comfort of her den, Sunshine doesn't often want to come out to say hello. She'll accept some pets, but can become a little hissy. We know the big and bright Care Center is a substantial shift from her wall-living days, so we're always on hand to give her lots of treats and the space she asks for. We're hoping a patient and loving family will help to bring this Sunshine out of her shell a little more.

On 04/3/25 at approximately 8:30 am, I examined Sunshine 219207. She has appropriate mentation at this time with no neurologic signs present, and has not exhibited any neurological signs while at ACC.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Sunshine was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. Sunshine was in a foster home for a short period of time, no behavior information was collected past the bite history circumstances. On 3/24/2025 at approximately 2pm the foster parent was in the bathroom with Sunshine attempting to administer an oral medication. The foster parent cornered Sunshine and also trimmed her nails, cleaned her ears, and applied dry shampoo. During all of these treatments, Sunshine was distressed, and swatting and biting at foster parent. Foster parent sustained one puncture wound on her pointer finger and one cut underneath her right eye. Foster cleaned and treated her wounds at home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/14/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, hidden from view. She does not show interest in the treats or catnip toy offered and her food bowls appear untouched. Nervous girl, hopefully she explores the offerings later when she feels more comfortable. 2/16/25 FB79 Inside of her den, Sunshine peaks her head out when I approach and softly speak; she has neutral eyes but hisses harshly and quickly retreats back into the den when i toss in treats. A few moments later I see her pop her head back out, and she’s slow blinking from across the room as I speak to her softly. 2/28/25 FB61 Lying on perch upon approach, body and face tense and pupils dilated. She flattens her ears as I open the kennel door and she hisses as I leave some treats on her perch. She remains completely focused on me with airplane ears so I speak to her softly for a moment, slow-blink and end the session. 4/2/25 FB58 Laying with a neutral face and body on her bed, she tenses and begins to hiss with her ears tilted when she notices me. I speak softly to her and she stands as she continues to hiss. I open the cubby door and slowly place some dry treats down but she is uninterested and jumps up onto the shelf. 4/7/25 FB79 Laying with a relaxed body, Sunshine has her paws tucked away with a loose tail and a neutral face when i open the kennel door; however, her ears flatten to her head when i speak and when i slow bring in the tool she hisses and quickly stands with a mid level body and tail retreating to the top part of her kennel where she watched me with wide eyes and airplane ears as she started to lip lick.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sunshine was in his cat den as the assessor approached, body and face completely hidden from view. Sunshine did not react when spoken to and he hissed as the kennel door opened. Sunshine tolerated petting from within his den with the assess-a-hand while remaining very still and hissing continuously. Sunshine began to growl after his assessment ended. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 04/01/25 Sunshine displayed similar behaviors during her re-assessment. She hisses and retreats but she does not escalate further. Sunshine tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
