Animal Profile

Sherman

Hello, my name is Sherman. My animal id is #109136. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 4 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/23/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Sherman arrived at MACC as a stray with a limited history. During a previous stay Sherman arrived with a bite history. Sherman bit his owners partner while they were having a verbal dispute. Sherman then bit the person on the thigh and on the shin. During his current stay at the care center Sherman has been observed to be fearful. Noted to be hesitant to leave kennel and will walk with a low body. With a slow approach, he has warmed up to select handlers, but has now started displaying deteriorating behavior. He has been observed to lick, bite, and chew his kennel walls. Medically, he apparently has otitis externa.

Summary (6):: 5/12/25: While the room is active Sherman is observed to be hypersalivating, pressing his face in the corner of his kennel and barking persistently. 5/8/25: Sherman is observed to lick and chew on the kennel wall. 5/8/25: Sherman is standing at the front of kennel with a soft body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and he steps down onto his kuranda bed. He is taken to the street for a walk. He maintains a soft and relaxed body throughout his walk. Sherman does not pull and walks slightly ahead of handler. He does not react to both people or dogs passing by and continues accepting treats gently. Handler does not attempt to pet. He is brought back to his kennel without issue. 4/27/25: Sherman is laying down in his kennel as hander approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he slowly stepped out of his kennel. He then stops walking in the hallway, and refused to walk forward. The handler then motivates him to continue walking by squeaking a toy and offering him a treat. He then is able to walk outside and reach the end of the block before he stopped again. He was comfortable approaching other handlers that were outside for treats. He is then slowly taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he was comfortable approaching the handlers for treats and pets. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is slowly taken back to his kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 04/24/25: Sherman is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them gently before handler unlocks the kennel door and leashes Sherman without issue. The kennel door is opened and handler waits for Sherman to come out, he attempts to dip his toes out of kennel but retreats back into kennel. He is offered treats and given a kuranda bed to help him step out of kennel. A staff member attempts to coax Sherman out with sweet talk and a squeaker but Sherman again retracts back into kennel. He sits near the front of kennel and intermittently sticks his head out but refuses to exit kennel. Finally handler uses mild leash pressure in an attempt to coax him out but Sherman remains in the front of kennel sitting and staring at handler. Handler carefully closes the door and interaction is ended. 12/28/20: Sherman is at the front of the kennel barking and growling when handler approaches. When the kennel is cracked open, he retreats to the back, barking and growling and avoids the leash that is extended into the kennel. The kennel is closed and another handler that Sherman knows better approaches the kennel. Sherman then comes to the front of the kennel with a loose body and is easily leashed and taken out by this handler. 12/23/2020- Sherman is near the front of his kennel and allows leashing. He is slow to come out of his kennel. Once out he walks slowly on leash. He explores the yard ignoring the handler. No handling is attempted. No issues going back. 12/21/20: Sherman is at the front of the kennel with a low body. When the kennel is cracked open, he retreats to the back. He is not interested in treats tossed to him, but when spoke to in a happy voice he wags his tail and comes forward with a still lowered body. When the leash is presented, he backs away again, but he is able to be lassoed with the leash and then easily exits the kennel. Outside, he is fearful, having a tucked tail. No handling is attempted due to Sherman's fearfulness. He allows the leash to be clipped and is returned to the kennel without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Sherman has been observed to be fearful during his stay in the care center noted to be hesitant to leave kennel and walks with a low body. It is important to move slowly with Sherman, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
