Aurora Mist
Hello, my name is Aurora Mist. My animal id is #230952. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAurora Mist is at risk due to her beavioral concern in the care center. Aurora Mist is escalating leash biting which was noted in her prior home and arousal-related behaviors. She has begun to bite and climb the leash during handling, requiring redirection and assistance from multiple staff members. Aurora is also seen hard barking and baring teeth at the front of her kennel, panting heavily and rebounding between her kennel walls. Aurora Msit is noted to present with a loose, wiggly body in low-arousal settings. Medically, Aurora Mist is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I am playful and cute! What my previously family said about me: She is social/affectionate, very active and playful, quiet and lazy/couch potato. She likes to be in the bedroom and allows family to bathe and brush her. She goes on 20min walks 1-2x daily with mild to moderate pulling. She's never been crated and loves going for car rides and she knows the cues for sit and stay.

Summary:: QACC October 25' Although an owner surrender, there is limited information at this time that does not specify Aurora Mist's dog-to-dog outside of our care. 10/16/25 Could not conduct due to high arousal causing a lack of focus. Aurora Mist is returned to kennel. Will revisit at a later date. QACC July 25' Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/06/25 Mitsy is introduced at the gate to a male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Mitsy will approach the gate with a soft, docile frame while the greeter dog comes forward loose, wiggly, start/stopping along the gate line. Mitsy appears timid, giving slight tail wags and sitting directly in front of the gate, softly. The greeter dog will attempt to solicit play but as Mitsy remains sitting, the greeter dog loses interest and walks away. Mitsy will remain sitting, self-present, while being ignored by the greeter dog as he seeks attention from the handlers in the the next pen. Mitsy is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 11/1/25: Aurora Mist is at the front of her kennel jumping off her kennel walls and door as the handler approaches. As the handler opens the door and offers her a treat, Aurora will take the treats quickly, and continue mouthing at the door. The handler locks the kennel and leaves to get some cheese. This time, Aurora is able to be lured through the leash loop with cheese and leashed. Aurora Mist will pull hard out of the kennel and to the behavior office where she is clipped to a drag leash. In the office, Aurora Mist will run laps around the room, engaging briefly with handlers. She is given a licki mat with cheese which she engages with. After a while in the office, Aurora Mist will solicit petting from handlers, laying horizontally on the couch. When the handler calls her over to the door, she comes running and then lays down horizontally. She is leashed by luring her through the leash with cheese and returned to her kennel with no issue. 10/30/25 (Trainer Notte): Aurora Mist was at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She was easily leashed and excitedly bust out of her kennel, jumping at the handler as they exited the room. Aurora Mist pulled strongly to the Live Room and would walk part of the way there on her hind legs. When inside of the Live Room, Aurora Mist was clipped to a drag leash and was encouraged to engage with a snuffle mat. Aurora Mist would find one treat (out of multiple) and move to the nest enrichment item. The handler cleared the other enrichment items away and concentrated on the snuffle mat. They would slowly increase the number of treats they dropped into it, encouraging Aurora Mist to engage for longer. Aurora Mist was gradually able to engage with the snuffle mat for longer periods of time. When the session was over, Aurora Mist was easily leashed and pulled moderately back to her kennel. When inside, she did a 180 and tried to run back out of her kennel. The handler was able to guide her back in with leash pressure, where she was safely secured.
Summary (6):: 10/30/25: Aurora Mist is standing at the front of her kennel and begins leash biting as the handler attempts to place the lead over her head. She does this twice before allowing the handler to successfully leash her while taking treats from their hand. Once outside, Aurora pulls hard on a short leash but maintains a neutral frame while walking and exploring the neighborhood. When the session is complete, Aurora is escorted back to the care center and returned to her kennel safely without any issues.
Summary (7):: 10/29: ACS staff report that Aurora Mist is leash biting when trying to remove her from the kennel. Once out, she continues, climbing up the leash. Treats were tossed, and she stopped for a few seconds to sniff, but then immediately returned to leash biting. A second ACS had to assist the first in helping her out of the room. Once out of the room, she pulls hard and is heavily panting as she exits the building. 10/23/25: Aurora is seen to be hard barking and baring teeth at the front of her kennel, panting heavily and rebounding between her kennel walls. 10/22/25 Aurora is missing her harness and needs another one. The handler is able to leash her easily with treats and take her to the live room. There, Aurora displays a loose, wiggly frame. She will allow for the handler to place a harness onto her before returning her back to kennel. On her way back to kennel, she pulls while heavily panting. She will pull herself around corners, on her hind legs, pushing herself off of walls. She will enter her kennel willingly with no issue. 10/16/25: Aurora Misty is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and she pulls into the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she has a loose and wiggly body and wagging tail as she pranced around the room. She would approach the handlers and jump up with a loose and wiggly body and was comfortable being petted and would take treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is able to return back to her crate when the handler tosses treats inside. 10/16/25: Aurora Misty is pulling hard ahead with an ACS handler as the behavior handler approaches. She is able to be transferred to the behavior handler’s leash on the premises and she then pulls hard with heavy panting to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she greets the other dog at the gate with a loose body and then begins to be tense and bark at the dog due to being frustrated. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She then pulls hard ahead while trying pull and bark towards dogs on the way back to her crate. She has to be muscled into her crate due to not wanting to go back in. 7/10/25: Mitsy lunges at another crate dog once leashed for a walk. She hard barks and attempted to pull towards the crate as she walked out of the room. When returning, she resumes her kennel fighting and is difficult for the handler to return to her crate due to her persistence. 07/05/25: Misty is noted to pace and panting in her crate and will begin pulling her sheets into her kennel. 07/04/25: Msity is noted to push out her crate tray and display heavy panting and pacing.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Aurora Mist jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety: Aurora Mist began to display heavy panting and pacing during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Misty is noted to pace and panting in her crate and will begin pulling her sheets into her kennel. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: This behavior highlights her strength and the need for training to teach her to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage her pulling behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Kennel presence/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Aurora Mist is observed to kennel fight (lunge, hard bark) when passing dogs in crates and can be difficult to return at times due to her persistence. Aurora is seen to be hard barking and baring teeth at the front of her kennel, panting heavily and rebounding between her kennel walls. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Leash-biting: Aurora Mist is noted in the prior home to jump up and bite the lead. Teach him an alternative behavior, such as "leave it" or "drop it," using positive reinforcement. Practice these cues regularly in a controlled environment before applying them during walks. Consistency and patience are key to reducing leash-biting behavior. Please see the handout on Leash-biting.
