Animal Profile

Rylee

Hello, my name is Rylee. My animal id is #13115. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 9 months old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 8/11/2025.

Rylee is on the at risk list due to behavior concerns in care and noted in her previous home. Rylee in the care center has displayed hyperarousal in the care center, accompanied by leash biting during her behavior assessment. Rylee does have a bite history with another dog, and has bit and held onto another dogs ear breaking skin. Rylee was also recently returned after being adopted. She held and shook onto the resident dog's ear, which did not break skin. Rylee is also reported to be reactive on leash towards strangers and other dogs on walks. Medically, Mass and Pyoderma.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. Foster parent notes from 2022: Rylee is a cuddly love bug and has all the best qualities loyal, calm, and friendly. Rylee is vocal and will bark repeatedly when she knows she's about to go outside or fed a meal, but she is working on her manners and knowing when to be quiet and patient. She will also bark when a new guest arrives in the home, but her tail will be wagging and with lots of greeting and petting, she will resume being her regular sweet self. We've been calling it "the ceremony." She has greatly improved in not reacting to the front doorbell when a delivery is made.

Summary:: BACC Notes - Due to the concerning nature of Rylee's bite incident in the foster home, she is not an appropriate candidate for playgroup. MACC Notes- Rylee is nervous around other dogs and mostly avoids social interactions. Rylee was brought in as a stray so her behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department believes that Ryle would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. Any resident dogs should be polite and respectful. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. 11/20: When off leash at the Care Center, Rylee is extremely nervous, tucked but briefly greets the male helper dog then wanders the yard. 11/21: Rylee is slightly more social when introduced to a group of calm male and female dogs. She briefly displays an assertive posture with the female dog, then continues her session exploring the pens. 11/22: Rylee spends most of her session crying and pawing at the gate door. 11/2/21: When greeting a novel dog at the gate, Rylee is tense with raised hackles.

Summary (7):: From previous stay at ACC: 2/8/22: Rylee was sitting at kennel front with a neutral posture. She was easily leashed and walked with moderate pressure during the walk. She stopped in place when she saw another dog/walker pair but was receptive to coaxing behind a barrier and recovered quickly. When coaxed she approached the handler with a relaxed posture and was lured into a sit and took the treat gently. She did not react when I pet her across her back. She was easily clipped and returned to her kennel without issue. 1/30/22: Rylee was easily leashed and walked right out of her kennel. We went to the pens and she was wary as I attached a drag leash. She explored on her own walking around slowly. She refused treats offered. When I pet her she gave lip licks so i stopped. She returned without issue. 1/28/22: Rylee is sitting at kennel front with a neutral posture and pinned ears. She is easily leashed and exits her kennel without issue, walking loose leash. She is a bit nervous with a low tail and pinned ears and wide eyes, walking slowly while observing her surroundings. A behavior representative enters the pens with them and she approaches to sniff her and the cbs hands her the lead. Rylee accepts handling for the collar and attempts to pull away hard then allows a drag leash to be attached and explores her environment. While exploring, she passes handlers remaining uncomfortable - tucked ears and low almost tucked tail - and does not approach. The cbs knelt down and called her over and she slowly approached and sniffed her fingers with a soft mouth and accepts brief pets under her chin. The cbs coaxed her over with high value deli meats and she readily stands in front of her with relaxed ears and takes the pieces with a soft mouth. She walks away when she finishes the slices and remains aloof, uninterested in toys or interacting with staff apart from accepting treats. She is easily leashed and returns to her kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rylee so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. At the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning bite incident that occurred in the foster home, we feel that Rylee should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting in conjunction with being desensitized to a muzzle for walks, until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Rylee associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding:The adopter noted that She values food. There have been no attempts to touch or take food in her possession. Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Ryhlee began to jump on the handler during her handling assessment and began to become mouthy. In dogs is a state of heightened excitement and alertness triggered by social interactions or environmental stimuli, leading to behaviors like excessive barking, restlessness, jumping, mouthing, and pacing. Managing this condition involves consistent training with positive reinforcement, maintaining a structured routine, minimizing exposure to triggers, ensuring ample physical exercise, and providing mental stimulation through puzzle toys and interactive games. For severe cases, consulting a veterinary behaviorist or professional dog trainer is recommended Fearful: Rylee is noted in the prior home to become fearful when her paws are touched and doesn't allow her nails to be trimmed. Please see handout on the Decompression Period. Bite history (dog): 1st stay: During her time in a foster home in 2021, Rylee bit another dog's ear during a scuffle in the park. Rylee bit and held onto the other dog's ear and would not release readily. She would not release despite their best efforts. The foster had to pry Rylee's jaw open for her to release the other dog. The bite resulted on injury and blood drawn from the other dog. 2nd stay:2nd stay: Rylee was returned due to a bite incident. Anxiety/Separation Anxiety: Rylee's previous foster and in theprior home noted that she with become anxious when left alone. In the care center she is noted to display anxious behavior vocalizing and whining. On-leash reactivity: Rylee's is noted in the prior home to alert bark at stranger and other dogs while on walks. Leash-biting: During Rylee's handling assessment, she began to bite on the drag lead when picked up and during jog.
