Dembe
Hello, my name is Dembe. My animal id is #222824. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 5/23/2025.
Dembe is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Dembe has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Dembe is highly stressed in kennel, jumping off his kennel walls, constantly rebounding and covering his kennel in feces as a result. Dembe will jump so often in kennel that his paw pads are starting to bleed. Dembe is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Medically, Dembe is healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me.

Summary:: According to Dembe's previous owner(s), around Familiar dogs, Dembe is Tolerant as well with unfamiliar dogs. Dembe has no experience with unfamiliar dogs off leash. 06/04/25: While off-leash at the Care Center, Dembe was introduced to a male greeter dog. At the gate, Dembe approached with a loose body posture, and both dogs engaged in mutual scenting through the gate. Dembe began panting and shifted focus to the handler, displaying paw lifts and tail wags. The greeter dog was guided to the back of the pen to allow Dembe to enter. Both dogs were walked in a circular pattern to ease the introduction. They approached each other face-to-face and engaged in mutual scenting. The greeter dog initiated play by pawing at Dembe. In response, Dembe appeared avoidant, ducking his head away and moving into a play bow posture. Dembe showed signs of conflict, alternating between approaching and retreating. When the greeter dog attempted to engage again, Dembe responded with an air snap. At that point, the dogs were separated, concluding the interaction. 05/17/25: While off-leash at the Care Center, Dembe is introduced to a female greeter dog. Approaching the gate with anxiety, Dembe and the other dog scent each other. During this, Dembe will display paw raises. Unsure, Dembe begins pacing along the gate line. Although the greeter stays calm and engaged at the gate, Dembe’s hackles rise. He then looks to his handler for reassurance before seeking exit. 04/10/25 Dembe could not focus during the interaction due to excessive defecating very loose stool. Dembe paces back and forth, hunched over, attempting to defecate. Will revisit.
Summary (5):: 6/10/25: Dembe is jumping and vocalizing in front of his kennel door when the handler approaches. The handler opens up his kennel door which they give him a plush toy to hold which he is easily leashed. Dembe is taken to the behavior office for a socialization session. Dembe is given a snuffle matt and lick matt to engage in, when he is finished, he begins to jump on the handler for attention and he is given a plush toy. Dembe engages in a game of fetch and runs around the room, he seeks attention from the handler, allowing pets all over. After a while he is taken back into his kennel with no issue. 6/8: Dembe continues to bark rapidly while jumping to the top of his kennel during cleaning or walks. His kennel and his legs/paws are smeared in his feces from his bouncing off the kennel walls and his door.
Summary (6):: 6/6/25: Dembe is reported to be jumping in his kennel, rebounding constantly during cleaning. Smearing feces all over his kennel and his paws were bleeding from his rebounding according to staff. 6/4/25: Dembe was jumping up and pawing repeatedly on kennel door as handler approached. His kennel door and his legs were heavily soiled with feces. Dembe was leashed and walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Dembe explored the yard and the agility course. Dembe eventually settled in front of handler and accepted pets for a few moments before being returned to kennel. Dembe briefly balked in front of kennel but entered when he noticed a toy waiting for him. He picked it up and took it onto his kuranda bed. 6/1/25: Dembe was climbing up on kennel door as handler approached. A second handler distracted him with a rope toy as he was leashed. He carried the toy outside and part way up the ramp. Dembe was clipped to a drag leash once in the yard and spent time marking and scenting. He was highly toy motivated and engaged in fetch for some time. Dembe would retrieve the toy and drop it back at handler's feet, sometimes without being cued. He allowed handler to pick up his toys. Dembe appeared social as other dogs passed by the fence in close proximity, approaching with a loose frame and wagging tail. Dembe was returned to kennel without issue. 05/27/25: Dembe's legs are observed to be coated in feces while he is out on a walk with staff. He is also panting heavily with a flushed face (the walk had just started so does not appear to be from exertion). 05/25/25: Dembe is jumping up and down at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. The handler waits patiently, and once leashed, Dembe darts out of the kennel, walking ahead on a loose leash while occasionally turning back and attempting to bite the leash, though he continues walking. Dembe pulls hard on the leash while being escorted to the assessment room. Once inside, a collar and drag leash are placed on him, and he is set free to roam. He immediately runs over to the couch and begins engaging with a Kong toy. The handler replaces the old Kong with a new one stuffed with treats and frozen peanut butter. Dembe remains engaged with the Kong for a few minutes before exploring the room further and engaging with other enrichment items such as frozen meatballs and a frozen puzzle feeder, he will stay focused on the puzzle feeder for the remaining his stay in the room. Once the session is complete, Dembe is returned to his kennel safely with no issues. 05/17/25 (playgroup): Dembe is jumping up at the kennel door excitedly as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly out to yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Dembe spends time scenting and exploring the space. After his session, he is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely.
Summary (7):: 05/16/25: Dembe is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body, jumping up and pawing at the glass. He allows the handler to leash him with ease and is brought out for an enrichment walk. While outside, Dembe maintains a soft body but pulls hard on the leash as he walks with the handler. Scattered treats are offered, which Dembe eagerly devours. He allows petting and head rubs, leaning into the handler’s touch. When the session ends, Dembe is returned to his kennel safely with no issues. 05/06/25 Dembe is at the front of his kennel panting with dilated eyes. Dembe is leashed as he wiggles his way into the lead, proceeding outside to the play pens. Dembe will display a loose, wiggly frame as he pulls his way to the play pens. The handler uses slight leash pressure. As they enter the pen a drag is placed onto Dembe and the two will engage in treat games for the remainder of the time. Dembe is returned to the facility, entering the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 04/10/25: Dembe is standing in his crate as handler approaches. He is nervous of being leashed and would back away to the corner of his crate and would bark and snap at the leash. He would mouth at the handler's hand as he would take treats and would continue to back up and snap at the leash as it got closer to him. When he refused to re-approach the front again and nips at the handler's hand. The handler then ends the interaction and locks the crate to give him a moment to settle. Dembe greets the second handler standing in front of his crate door. The handler proceeds to feed treats to Dembe through the crate door. Dembe takes the treats hard with her front teeth. The handler lures Dembe through the leash but with each attempt to tighten the lead, Dembe will retreat out of the lead to the back of the kennel. On the last attempt the handler feeds Dembe treats and clips the leash while eats from their hand. Dembe is escorted to the play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction. (Please refer to Dembe's behavior assessment for his dog-to-dog summary.) Dembe is escorted to the live room so his crate can be cleaned. During which the handler tosses treats for Dembe to catch. Afterwards, Dembe is escorted back to his crate where he is unleashed and secured, safely. 4/9(assessment): Dembe was at the front of his crate with low tail wags when a handler approached. He readily accepts treats but backs away when the handler attempts to leash him. It takes a few tries, and Dembe backs up and begins huffing at the handler before he's finally leashed. He is brought to the behavior office for his assessment. He jumped up and paw slaps handler, body wiggly. Once his assessment is complete, the handler uses treats to lure Dembe to put his head through the lead. He does so successfully and is returned to his crate without issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Dembe Potential challenges we recommend be is placed in an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Dembe is noted to have accidents in his home, but his owners that intially surrendered him claimed he is housetrained. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), a consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished, as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. Even dogs that are housetrained may have accidents in the home as part of their acclimation to a new environment. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Dembe jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Leash-biting: Dembe is reported to nip at handler's hand when leashed.During the assessment, treats are tossed due to him taking treats roughly. Teaching him to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Dembe also was noted to leash bite during the jog portion of the handling assessment. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition and leash biting. Fearful: Dembe was noted to become fearful and huff wen leashing and become fearful of the dummy hand and fast movements. Please see the handout on decompression period.
