Animal Profile

Gadget

Hello, my name is Gadget. My animal id is #222839. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Gadget is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Gadget was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 03/27/25 FB58 In den and hidden from view - when the cover is removed, he hisses with eyes wide and dilated, low growls and flinches when treats are lightly tossed in. He turns to face the back of the den and hisses at the tool and moves forward with his mouth open. When the tool ends up in his mouth, he bites down on it hard but doesn't otherwise lunge or swat. He is tolerant of other pets with the tool and then gets out of the den and moves up onto the shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and back hunched. May need to be re-evaled to NHO if he continues to display this behavior. 4/7/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Gadget immediately swats and strikes the pointer tool when i bring it near the den door; he hisses upon striking and started to low growl/grumble. Gadget has wide eyes and a tense body with his shoulders hunched in as he watches me through the den glass for any further movement. 4/10/25 & 4/12/25 FB79 Today, Gadget displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. Inside of his den out of sight, i can hear him hissing when i open the kennel door and speak. When i slowly bring in the tool he quickly strikes it almost pulling it into the the den with him. 4/14/25 FB79 Today, Gadget was inside of his den and remained silent when i opened the kennel door and spoke; he did hiss when i lifted the den cover with a neutral face and body but hisses once again when i brought my hand in for pets. He hissed at the pointer tool as well and started to lip lick but tolerated pets on his head and cheeks briefly before hissing once again. 4/16/25 FB58 In his den and hidden from view, he lunges and strikes while low growling from inside the den when the cage door is opened. I lightly toss the tray with chicken near the portal opening and slowly close the cage door, hoping he will poke his head out to eat when he is alone. When I check back later, he has not touched the chicken and hisses at me from the portal opening. 4/22/25 FB61 Sitting upright in back of kennel, body and face tense and pupils dilated. He makes eye contact as I open the cubby door while remaining very still and hyper-fixated on me and my movements. I give him some treaties and he lunges and hisses as I'm closing his door. When I check back on him he has eaten all of his temptations! I give him some more after speaking to him softly and I do not push hands-on interaction at this time. 4/30/25 FB58 Gadget has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Gadget would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/25/25 Gadget was in his cat den as the assessor approached, initially completely hidden from view. Gadget did not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opened. Gadget tolerated petting from within his den with his eyes wide, ears titled, face and body tense and tail wrapped tightly around his body. Gadget was frozen in place for the duration of his assessment and pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 3/29/25 Upon meeting with gadget again, he is in his den and completely hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, he is sitting with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He then hisses and lunges at the front of the den. When the assessor slowly introduces the Assess-A-Hand, he begins to low growl with a low and tense body, eyes wide and dilated before he lunges and swats hard at the hand and hisses. Pick up is not attempted. Gadget is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
