Breadstick
Hello, my name is Breadstick . My animal id is #215064. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 8 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/24/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBreadstick is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In his previous home, Breadstick was reported to hard bark, growl, and lunge if his boundaries were pushed. With this noted behavior Breadstick does have a bite history to a child, the incident resulting in breaking skin. His previous owner also reported that he becomes anxious when left alone, crying and chewing on items. In the Care Centers, Breadstick has been extremely social with staff, readily engaging in play and rolling around for attention. He has also shown interest in interacting with other dogs and attempted to engage in play during Playgroup. Medically, Breadstick has been treated for an ear infection and has shown lameness in left front leg which resolved with rest. At this time Breadstick is healthy.

Breadstick was returned into care by his recent adopter due to behavior concerns. Prior to this, his previous owner described him as a social and affectionate dog who preferred to lounge in the living room, allowed his family to groom him, loved car rides, any kind of toys, and learning cues for treats. While in his recent adopter's home, Breadstick was reported to have intially nipped the resident child's ear in a seemingly playful manner. But Breadstick began growling and escalated to biting the resident child on the nose. This did draw blood but was cleaned at home. He was then crated and, after some time, let out. Once out of the crate, Breadstick was reported to chase the child while snapping. During his stay in care, Breadstick has been highly social with staff and handlers. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Breadstick be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Rescue partner that can allow him the time and space to decompress and acclimate on his own terms.

Summary:: Due to Breadstick entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 6/28/26: Breadstick greets a novel female dog through a barrier off leash. Breadstick at the gate is initially marking and scenting along the fence line as the female greets him with a soft body. Breadstick begins to wag his tail, with his ears pinned back and whines/play bows at the gate. Both dogs greet on leash and Breadstick sniffs the female as she stands still, hops between her and begins to bow trying to solicit play. Breadstick continues to try and solicit play but the female appears uninterested, so Breadstick is moved and will be revisited with an appropriate playmate. 11/21/24 Breadstick is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at thew care center. Breadstick greets the novel female dog at the gate with a loose frame, poking his rear end in the air with a swaying tail. Breadstick will whimper as he attempts to make contact with the novel female dog and is taken to greet her face-top-face. Breadstick exuberantly displays an exaggerated approach, getting in the novel female dog's face upon his entry. Breadstick will attempt to sniff her genitals as he salivates with wide eyes while chattering. Breadstick is sexually motivated, attempting to mount the novel female dog but she will move away. The novel female dog will protect her genitals by sitting firmly, but Breadstick will still make unwarranted body contact, paw slapping her and attempting to mount again. Breadstick is moved away followed by returning him to kennel.

He is later returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely. 07/24/26: Breadstick is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought to the office. Once in the BT room, a drag leash is placed on him, allowing him to freely roam. Breadstick explores the room with curiosity, sniffing and licking various surfaces. The handler scatters treats onto a snuffle mat, but Breadstick shows no interest in engaging with it. However, when the handler scatters the treats directly onto the floor, Breadstick eagerly accepts them, eating every last bit and thoroughly enjoying the snack. Breadstick is safely returned to his kennel without any issues. 11/21/24: Breadsticks is at the front of his kennel and will begin jumping up pawing at the glass but will be leashed with ease and brought to the BT room and will be set free to roam the room, while doing so Breadsticks will engage with handler running up jumping on primary handler seeking attention and begging for treats, attempting to take treat from handle's pouch without consent. Breadstick will eventually settle down lying by handler's chair. Breadstick will be brought back to his kennel safely.

Summary:: Social, are going, jumps up on staff, allowed all intake tasks
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Breadstick's reported history with the resident child and bite history, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Breadstick be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Breadstick to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior he presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Breadstick is reported to become tense and hover over food and toys in his previous adopter's home. Please see handout on resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Breadstick has demonstrated a lack of basic manners in the care center, jumping up onto staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Destructive behavior/Anxiety/ Separation anxiety: In his previous home, Breadstick was reported to become anxious when left alone for extended periods. He would bark, cry, and chew on things, such as clothes. Breadstick is also showing some anxiety during his first stay in care. Although his previous adopter did not report anxiety-based behaviors, it is unknown whether this will translate into a new home environment. If Breadstick does display generalized anxiety, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. See the handout on Generalized Anxiety, Destructive Behavior, and Separation anxiety. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Bite history (human)| Low threshold for arousal: Breadstick was reported to have bitten his recent adopter's child's nose after interacting with the resident child. The bite did break skin and draw blood. After the incident, he was separated and placed in his crate. After some time, he is let out of the crate and began chasing the child around the home, snapping at them. The adopter reported that he mostly avoided the child but did escalate to hard barking, growling, lunging, and snapping at the child. Please see handout on Arousal and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
