Animal Profile

Ashiya

Hello, my name is Ashiya. My animal id is #246413. I am a desexed female gray brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Ashiya is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Ashiya arrived at the Care Center as owner surrender due to housing concerns. Ashiya's previous owner reported she is fearful of new people but did tolerate handling for a medical exam. During her stay, Ashiya has warmed up to staff, allows for easy leashing for walks, engages in fetch/trade games, and is social with staff. Recently however, Ashiya has shown increased reactivity to dogs and at times difficult to handle safely due to risk of redirection. In one instance when being reactive to a dog Ashiya turned and jumped up and bit a handler on the arm, no broken skin. Medically, Ashiya is apparently healthy.

Over time Ashiya warmed up to handler and presents with a wiggly body. Recently Ashiya has been observed to react to other dogs while on leash. During one instance after reacting to another dog Ashiya spun towards the handler, jumped up, and bit them on the arm. This bite did not break skin. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only, single pet home that makes no trips to the dog park. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an experienced adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to her on leash reactivity and potential for redirection we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: It is reported that Ashiya will hard bark or growl at strangers that approach. During her assessment Ashes was observed to be tense and fearful. It is important to move slowly with Ashes, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Ashiya has been observed to be reactive to other dogs. During one instance after reacting to a dog Ashiya spun towards the handler and bit them on the arm. This bite did not result in broken skin. Ashiya will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
