Summary:: Zeus arrived at the care centers as a stray, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown. 08/22/26 Zeus is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches the gate, sniffing the female with a loose frame. Zeus is guided into the yard and both sniff along opposite sides of the yard with neutral frames, never fully greeting. 7/30/26: Zeus is introduced to a novel spayed female and approaches the gate with a neutral body and mid level wags. He disengages and interacts with handlers and the other dog is let into the yard. He flags over to her and engages in mutual sniffing and stands over her before humping without redirection. The other dog does not correct him but displays signs of discomfort and he is pulled away. He pulls towards her with a forward leaning body and does not redirect his attention while being brought out of the yard. 6/6/26: Zeus greets a novel female dog on leash through a barrier. Zeus at the gate will remain neutral bodied but when sniffing the female grows tense, his tail raised and wagging high and begins to close his mouth. The female does not engage or sniff the gate but remains close and seeks attention from staff and will walk by whale eyeing Zeus.

Summary (5):: 9/24: Zeus continues to bang his bowl around his kennel throughout the day. It was previously swapped out for a heavier ceramic one in an attempt to ensure that he would not be able to lift/move it. But he was still able to break it, which caused him to bleed. Unknown if the blood was from his mouth/toungue or paws. He continues to ignore in kennel enrichment 09/22/26: Zeus is observed to be persistently pulling his water bucket, banging it on the kennel repeatedly. 08/31/26: Zeus is observed to have pulled his metal bowl into kennel and was chewing on it and throwing it around. 8/13/26: Zeus is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it and is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would jump up on the handler with a loose body and is able to be redirected with treats. He would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected when the handler squeaks a toy and he would sit to receive treats. When returning back into his kennel, he grabs the handler's leash and begins to chew at it. He is able to drop the leash instantly when the handler tosses treats inside the kennel. The handler is then able to retrieve the leash, locks door and ends the interaction. 7/30/26: Zeus is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. When the handler attempts to leash him, Zeus jumps up and attempts to bite the leash; when the handler presents a treat as a lure, they quickly leash him and bring him out the room. Zeus is brought to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). Before the interaction, Zeus is given treats from the other handlers; he also follows them around and slightly fixates on their treat pouch. After the interaction, the handler brings Zeus inside; during the elevator ride, Zeus pulls towards the door, and as it opens, he walks with mild leash tension. The handler clips their leash and returns Zeus to his kennel.

Summary (6):: 7/29/26: Staff reported that Zeus has been chewing his water bucket that is hanging in his kennel. A video was taken of this behavior. The bucket is visibly dented and there is blood on the bucket. 7/25/26 (Trainer Note): Zeus was barking at the front of his kennel when the trainer approached. He was leashed with a treat lure and upon coming out went to eat the food that had fallen beside his kennel. Once he was redirected with treats he pulled hard through the kennels on the way to the training room. Once there he was receptive to polite exchange for a few rounds before transitioning to leave it. Due to his poor vision leave it was reinforced on a snuffle mat. Kennel return was uneventful. 7/21/26: Zeus has been observed to purposely knock his hanging water bucket, both when it's filled and empty. It occurs while the room is slightly active. 7/19/26: Zeus is jumping up against the kennel door with a loose body and wagging tail. He is leashed with a treat and brought to the yard. He engages in pattern games for treats. He allows petting and relieves himself. He checks in frequently. He allows leash clipping and returns to kennel with ease. 7/11/26 (Training Note): Zeus was barking at the front of kennel during approach. He was leashed with a treat lure and pulled hard towards the elevator. Once in the training room he was able to work on a modified version of leave it while being rewarded on the snuffle mat. He was able to progress to working on touch being able to work through several rounds. During kennel return he pulled hard back to the elevator. 7/8/26: Zeus is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He takes treats. He is easily leashed and once out of the kennel jumps up and grabs the handlers poop bags and pulls. He releases and resumes walking. He is lead to the street where he walks with a neutral body and pulls lightly. He ignores passersby. He is lead to the assessment room (see notes) then returned to kennel with ease. 06/30/26: Zeus is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is leashed while distracted with a treat and exits kennel following handler out to the street for his walk. He stares at a staff member he passes sitting in the hallway but is kept near handler. He walks neutral bodied outside and passes people without issue, Zeus will accept tossed treats from handler and sits when asked. When passing a parked car with its side door open, Zeus begins attempting to pull towards it and a dog suddenly begins reacting to Zeus, hard barking and growling at him. He stares but does not react further and is pulled away by handler. He continues his walk for a while before he is eventually brought back inside. Zeus is returned to kennel following a treat tossed inside, interaction is ended shortly after.

Summary (7):: 6/18/26: Zeus is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought him out the room. When he sees other dogs, Zeus presents a forward body and briefly stress at them until he looks away. On the street, Zeus walks ahead with mild leash tension. He occasionally looks back at the handler for treats; he sits and eats what's tossed to him. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Zeus to his kennel. 6/14/26: Zeus is brought into the behavior office for some decompression time. He allows petting with a loose body. He eats a chew on the couch and wags his tail with a loose body when the handler approaches or speaks to him during which. 6/10/26: Zeus has been observed to be repeatedly barking in his crate. Handler grabs some toy balls and places them in his crate. Zeus takes them and engages with them. He stretches out in his crate lying down on his belly with his legs sticking out behind him. He is chewing on the ball repeatedly for a while and remains quiet. 6/5/26: Zeus is at front of crate as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulled from crate. He is taken for a street walk. Zeus walked slightly ahead of handler while lightly pulling. He accepted treats with a soft mouth. Zeus would lean into handler while receiving pets on his head, neck, back and chest. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/1/26: It is observed that Zeus is barking persistently while in his crate. 5/31/26 (Assessment): Zeus was in the front of his crate panting as handler approached. He was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Coming out of kennel he pulled hard directly to the crates of other dogs in the hallway, he did not have any aggressive behavior but was sniffing the crates. Handler took him for a street walk before his assessment. On his walk he did not demonstrate any reactivity towards dogs or people. During his assessment he took treats hard and was social with handlers. He was returned to his crate with no issue. 8/22/25- Zeus is at the middle of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash and has no reaction to any stimuli. He continuously sniffs throughout the walk. Handler offers him a treat and he gently takes them from their hand. When returning to the building another dog passes by, Zeus just looks at them with a neutral body and disengages on his own. He is taken for his assessment where he is easily collared and is more social with handlers, gently taking treats. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Zeus so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Zeus was observed to bite and hold the assess-a-hand with a neutral body and wagging tail while in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Zeus's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness: Zeus has been observed to take treats hard and attempt to mouth handlers when seeking treats. Zeus has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Zeus to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful: During medical exams Zeus was reported to become tense and frozen for certain medical tasks. Zeus should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Zeus’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Zeus would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new environment. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: During his previous intake, Zeus arrived with his sibling and was reported to have not been separated often by his previous owners, when separated, they began whining and panting while looking for the other. During his current stay Zeus has been observed to walk in a zig zag while on leash. If Zeus displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
