Pre-Screener Form

Yuki Boy is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Yuki Boy arrived at the Care Center with no known history. Upon intake, Yuki Boy was noted to warm up to staff, soliciting contact by placing his head on staff member's laps and hands. Unfortunately, Yuki Boy has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, despite efforts to keep him comfortable. Yuki Boy is consistently refusing walks, noted to avoid being leashed and when outside of kennel often baulks and refuses to walk. Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 4/7/2026

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history

Date of assessment:: 4/11/2026

Summary:: Yuki Boy is highly fearful in the Care Centers, and refuses to walk out of his kennel. When he does leave, he does not walk outside. Due to these behaviors, he will not get a handling assessment.

Summary (6):: 4/13/26: Yuki Boy is laying in kennel but stands at the front, neutral body, head low, when handler approaches. He walks in a circle as handler tries to leash then stands at the front head down not looking up at handler. Once the leash is secured, the door is opened wide but he does not step out. After many minutes of handler attempting to coax him from kennel another handler comes to remove dirty linen with a hook. Yuki avoids the hook and comes to the front of the kennel. Another known handler comes and calls to him. He follows them out to the hall but then stops walking. After a few more minutes, he is lured to the yard but refuses to go up the stairs. Handler pets him and he leans in. He returns to kennel following the know handler back. 4/12/26: Yuki Boy is lying down in his kennel upon approach. Handler unlocks the kennel and Yuki Boy retreats to the back of the kennel and sits down. Handler opens the kennel a crack and tosses treats to him. He takes them and eats them slowly as he approaches the front of the kennel. He dodges the leash briefly but re-approaches. Handler is able to leash him carefully and the kennel door is opened. Treats are tossed on the ground and he stares at them refusing to move forward. Handler slowly lifts him out of the kennel. He thrashes slightly but exits the kennel and quickly walks out of the room. Handler grabs some wet food and uses it to encourage him further out of the building. Yuki walks slowly behind the handler to a pen. He stops a few times and handler shows him the plate of wet food. Yuki enters the pen and the wet food is placed on the ground. Yuki approaches the wet food and eats it slowly. He remains standing in the pen and does not move. Another staff member enters the pen and Yuki looks to them but does not approach. He remains standing in the middle of the pen for awhile. When the staff member and handler make sudden movements or loud noises, Yuki will flinch slightly. After sometime, handler walks to exit the pen. Yuki remains and leash pressure is applied to encourage him forward. He stays planted and refuses to walk forward with the handler. He will walk for treats being thrown down. He still refuses to move and handler has to use leash pressure to encourage him forward. Handler eventually reaches to lift him up. He startles slightly but allows the handler to lift him up and carry him back inside the building. He is placed back inside the kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 4/11/26 (PM walk): Yuki Boy is standing in his kennel with a neutral body. As the handler attempts to leash him, he moves to the back and front of his kennel to avoid it. The handler tosses treats inside, but Yuki shows no interest. After several attempts, the handler leashes Yuki with a pole leash; leash pressure is applied for Yuki to come to the front, and he eventually exits. The handler has to jog him as he baulks; he walks, but then drags his hind legs. The handler brings Yuki into the office; there, Yuki just sits in place with a leaned-back, tense body. Afterwards, the handler jogs Yuki to the driveway, however her drags his hind legs again; the handler and other staff speak to him in a baby voice, but he doesn't move. Suddenly startled, Yuki jogs out the hallway and into the driveway. He doesn't react to dogs or passersby. Yuki maintains the same behavior, leaning away with a tense body. the handler then jogs him inside with leash tension. Once he is in kennel, the handler attempts to remove the pole leash with the hook, but it doesn't move, and Yuki avoids it many times. The handler leaves him alone for a few minutes, but comes back and is able to remove the leash. 4/11/26: Reported via whiteboard that Yuki Boy refused PM walk and was very tense. 4/10/26: It was reported via the behavior board that Yuki Boy was acting strange. Not wanting to come out of kennel nor wanting to leave building. 4/9/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Yuki Boy "still needs more time, he likes pets but still scared to come out"
