Major Sylvester
Hello, my name is Major Sylvester. My animal id is #225465. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/24/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMajor Sylvester is At risk due to behavior concerns in care that resulted in a bite towards a staff memebr. . While he is highly food motivated, social with handlers, and generally easy to leash and return, he exhibits kennel fighting and escalates to redirecting onto a staff member during a kennel fight, resulting in a bite with one puncture. Despite this, he has also displayed calm, affiliative behavior outside the kennel, participating in enrichment sessions and "find it" games with handlers. Medically, Major Sylvester is apparently healthy.

In care he has not adjusted and has shown kennel fighting behavior, which resulted in a redirection bite, leaving one puncture towards the handler on their hand. During socialization session, he displayed calm, affiliative behavior outside the kennel, participating in enrichment sessions and "find it" games with handlers. Due to his bite history, arousal challenges, and reactivity in a kennel environment, he requires placement through a New Hope partner equipped to work on behavior modification in a low-stress environment.

Summary:: Due to Major Sylvester entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/01/25 When off leash at the Care Center Major Sylvester is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Major Sylvester approaches hard pull to the gate. The novel male will approach with a soft frame and tail wagging and both dogs will scent one another. Major Sylvester will hard bark before prey bowing. Major Sylvester will continue to display a forward frame, with hackles raised as The novel male retreats from the gate. The novel male begins displacement scenting. Major Sylvester begins whining. Both dogs are separated thus ending the interaction. 04/30/25 Major Sylvester is introduced to a novel female dog at the gate while off leash at the care center. Major will greet the novel female, scenting her from between the holes in the gate. Major will mark the novel female dog from behind the gate, showing signs of sexual motivation. Major will prance on his tip-toes while vocalizing at the novel female dog attempting to solicit her attention. The novel female dog continues to ignore him while he remains self-present with a high flagging tail. Major is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 04/28/25 Due to fearfulness, the behavior team felt its in Major's best interest for him not to attend play group. Will revisit at a later date.
Summary (6):: 5/14/25: Major Sylvester approached handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He walked to the yard and was clipped to a drag leash. Major Sylvester's kennel was clean and he relieved himself while outside. Major Sylvester spent time sniffing around the perimeter of the yard and observing other dogs/pedestrians passing by. Major Sylvester showed brief interest in a toy but did not continue to engage in fetch. He approached on his own terms and sat at handlers feet. He accepted pets and eventually climbed up onto bench beside handler. Major Sylvester sat down and accepted pets on his chest. He slid closer to handler when they stopped. Major Sylvester would move his ears or turn his head in response to sounds of leashes jangling/dogs barking. He remained seated and handler spoke to him in a reassuring tone. Major sat calmly by handler for some time until there was a break in the rain. Major seemed to like perching and climbed up on another bench on the way back to the care center. When returning to kennel, Major Sylvester turned and looked at other dogs in the room but was easily guided into kennel using directional leash pressure.
Summary (7):: 05/05/25: Major Sylvester is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly up to the play yard. He will stop and scent urine spots along the walk and will mark them in turn. Major Sylvester keeps to self for his first several minutes in the yard, scenting, marking, and relieving himself. He will tense and become hypervigilant when dogs pass by but does not escalate and will sit in front of handler until they are out of sight. Handler speaks to him with a light tone and offers him treats which he takes gently from hand. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 05/04/25 (AM) As the handler approaches, Major toe-taps with a soft, wiggly frame. Major will remain still as the handler leashes him and they will proceed outside to the play yard. Major will exit the kennel, exiting the kennel room maintaining a loose frame. Major will exit the facility, marking different areas as they proceed to the play yard. Major will enter the play yard and engage in treat games with the handler. The handler will toss treats and cue Major to "find it" and he will seek out treats tossed around. Major and the handler will do this for some time. Major is returned to the facility where he will enter the building and his kennel with no issue 04/30/25:When the handler approaches Major Sylvester standing in front if his crate door with a neutral frame. He easily leashed although weary of the lead initially and escorted out of the care center to the play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction (Please refer to Major Sylvester's behavior assessment for his dog-to-dog summary. When on leash Major Sylvester is on leash he will mildly pull with head of the handler. After his interaction Major Sylvester is escorted back to his crate where he is safely secured. 04/26/25 (assessment): Major Sylvester is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He begins jumping up on the kennel door excitedly as handler cracks it open and is redirected with tossed treats. Major Sylvester is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). He is collared, clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. Major Sylvester is highly treat motivated and will push his face into handler's treat pouch to eat treats before attempting to jump up onto the counter that houses the treat containers. As assessor moves forward to pick up his drag lead, Major Sylvester will shriek once, begin leash biting a leash that is on the floor and then quickly drops it and goes into a sit. The assessment is then conducted as normal. He remains social with handlers throughout his time in the room. He plants himself in front of kennel upon return and shows no interest in tossed treats. Light directional leash pressure is used to guide him back into kennel.
