Enzo
Hello, my name is Enzo. My animal id is #243847. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/15/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormEnzo is at risk for behavior reasons. Enzo was initially highly fearful entering the care center. He has warmed up to select staff members but remains reactive to unfamiliar persons. He has some handling sensitivity, escalated to snapping when safety being clipped. He does well with slow introductions and has done well greeting another dog through a gate. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Pre-Screener Form Enzo is a social, affectionate, and playful dog who loves being around people and enjoys car rides, walks, and gentle play. He is crate trained, comfortable with grooming, and knows basic cues like sit, paw, and lay down. While he thrives in a loving home environment, Enzo is highly fearful of strangers and can show defensive aggression or sensitivity to handling, so he will need a patient adopter experienced with shy or anxious dogs. He takes time to warm up but does allow minimal handling once comfortable. Enzo would do best in a calm, consistent home where he can gain confidence at his own pace.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high level of fear, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Enzo is having a difficult time adjusting to the care center. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Enzo lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/Touch Sensitivity: Enzo has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, escalating to snaping when the leash is secured, or when staff attempt to safety clip him. It is important to always go slow and give Enzo the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Enzo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. He may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see the handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression: Enzo gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Enzo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Enzo appears anxious at the care center, whining, pacing, showing conflicting body language. If Enzo displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity: Enzo has shown reactivity on leash towards unfamiliar people. He will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
