Animal Profile

Benji

Hello, my name is Benji. My animal id is #65751. I am a desexed male tan dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 5 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/23/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Benji is at risk for behavioral reasons. Benji has deteriorated during his stay in the care center and has exhibited increasing dog reactivity. Benji would be best suited for placement with an experienced adopter prepared to offer reward based training. Medically, Benji seems healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: If you like your furry friends smiley, stunning, and oh-so-sweet, then you definitely need to meet Benji! From the moment I see this boy's sweet, buttery face break out into a smile as I invite him for a walk...well, I can't help but smile too! Benji is an active boy who pulls a bit on leash but is also very responsive to his handler so, hello, new workout buddy! Benji also loves his snacks and takes them gently from you palm, even sitting if you ask politely. Our boy is looks and manners. So get ready for buttery goodness and come meet our Benji, we promise he won't disappoint! Benji is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

Due to history of barking and lunging at dogs during a previous stay in the care center, a single pet home is recommended due to severity of this behavior. BROOKLYN CARE CENTER: 6/13: When off leash at the Care Center, Benji is introduced to a novel female dog. He initially does not greet the female and explores the yard, but when the female approaches him the exchange genital sniffs and he slowly becomes sexually motivated. He heightens his posture and positions himself to mount but is interrupted by handlers. He walks away and continues exploring the pens. 6/17: Benji continues to display sexually motivate behaviors with a novel female. He does not attempt to mount the female and listens to handler interruption. He walks away to explore the pens. 7/9: Upon his return to playgroup from the Wellness Ward, Benji's sexual motivation has become more intense, fixating on the female dog, difficult to distract and becomes frustrated- barking and lunging to get to her.

Date of initial:: 6/14/2019

Summary:: Tense body, approached staff readily, panting; Allowed all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Benji has been observed to exhibit a medium level of energy during his interactions in the care center.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 10/24: Benji pulls extremely hard while on leash. In the yard, he is distracted by the other dog in the adjacent pen. He will jump up onto the fence and vocalize. Once the other dog leaves the yard, he continues to pace the yard either seeking exit or the other dog. He allows handler to pet him but does not seek attention. 10/28/19 Benji was easily leashed. When taken to the yard he began doing laps and practicing cues but spotted a dog in the hallway and began fixating and jumping up on the fence to see the on the dog. Benji was not responsive to treats, toys or having his name called. When another dog entered the yard he began vocalizing and jumping up, pacing and was fixated on the dog, pulling on his way back to his kennel. 10/29/19 Benji was jumping up and barking in his cage but responded to the "sit" cue for a treat. He was also receptive to in kennel clicker training, whereas whenever he placed all four paws on the floor, the handler would click the clicker and offer Benji a treat. He caught on to this pretty quickly, knowing that 'four on the floor' equals treats, however, in between treats, he would jump on to the kennel doors. He was revisited later in the day, and was able to remain with all four paws on the floor for a total of seven seconds before jumping on the kennel door again. 11/3/19- Benji jumped on his hind legs when approached the cage but upon seeing a treat he lowered himself onto all 4 legs and received a treat. He practiced staying on all 4 legs (using the clicker as a marker) and was able to remain standing with no barking for almost a minute. Benji did not vocalize at all during this interaction. 11/4/19 Benji was in his bed and came forward, getting up on his hind legs but not barking. He came down when asked. 11/11/19 Benji has been working on his in kennel presence. He did not jump up when I initially approached and was able to practice holding the "sit" cue for around a minute before beginning to whine and then jumping up but was very good about getting back down once i turned away from him and will readily sit for a treat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: Recommend no dog parks/Single pet home: Due to the concerning behaviors that Benji has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Benji should not visit dog parks and should be the only resident dog until he has had the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills when interacting with other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Benji receive any follow up under the supervision of a certified trainer or behaviorist.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: On-leash reactivity: While in the lobby and encountering a novel dog walking by on leash, Benji was observed to pull hard toward the dog and vocalize. During walks on leash, Benji has been observed to hard bark, whine and pull towards dogs in passing. Should this behavior arise in a home environment, please refer to the handout for On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
