Animal Profile

Bugzy

Hello, my name is Bugzy . My animal id is #79632. I am a male brown brindle dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/15/2019, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Bugzy was placed at risk due to behavior deterioration in the shelter environment. He has been reported to display kennel frustration and snapping at handlers. Due to this behavioral concern we are recommending placement out of the shelter environment as soon as possible with an experienced dog adopter. Bugzy was diagnosed with a Heart Murmur.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: If beautiful brindle babe is your thing, we should probably meet! I'm Bugzy and I like to take my time with meeting new people. If you give me a few minutes to warm up to you, my playful, friendly personality shines. Speaking of shine, my smooth brindle coat is as lustrous as they come. Once we get to know each other, I'm happy to play games! I'm always up for Tug and I'm working on perfecting my Fetch skills. I'm 4 years old and I walk nicely on leash. I'm looking forward to really bonding with someone who wants to help me come out of my shell. I'm just a sweet brindle boy who is ready to be your best friend.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 52 lbs

Summary:: Here at the Care Center, Bugzy is uncomfortable when introduced to novel dogs. He is initially conflicted when greeting a playful novel female, but as he attends further playgroup sessions he displays reactive behaviors - hard barking, growling, and muzzle punching the gate. According to Bugzy's previous owner, he growls at other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Bugzy be placed in a home with no other dogs until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed once he has adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. The Behavior Department recommends reward-based, force-free training only to desensitize and counter-condition Bugzy using toys or treats to help him associate other dogs with positive experiences. 11/16: When off leash at the Care Centers, Bugzy tucks his tail and lowers his body when greeting the novel female dog. When the greeter's tail hits his face, he jumps back with his ears pinned back. After exploring the area for several minutes, Bugzy becomes slightly comfortable to reapproach the greeter. He offers conflicting behavior- play bows with pinned back ears and grumbles. He listens to the interruptions and walks away. 11/17-20: Bugzy ignores a novel female today as he keeps to himself as he wanders the pens. 12/12: Bugzy returns to playgroup after returning from foster and recovering from CIRDC. He is introduced to a novel female dog and is immediately reactive - hard barking, muzzle punching the gate, and growling. Due to the female's inexperience, an off-leash interaction is not conducted.

Date of intake:: 11/15/2019

Summary:: Friendly, allowed all handling, wiggly

Date of initial:: 11/16/2019

Summary:: Whale eyed, nervous

ENERGY LEVEL:: Bugzy is reported to have a medium to high energy level in his previous home environment; we recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as a way to direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 12/28: Bugzy was easily removed from his kennel and taken on a walk. Upon returning to his kennel, Bugzy entered his kennel without hesitation. Once in, Bugzy turned and lunged at handler's rope. He then continued lunging, following the handler's hand up until the kennel was locked. He was moved to room 9 as a precaution. 12/7: When the dog behind Bugzy lifted the transfer door that separates them, Bugzy greeted him with a soft posture. The other dog was removed without an issue. 11/22/19: Bugzy was taken to the assessment room for socialization. Once in the room, he engaged in play and solicited attention after a few minutes.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Bugzy's reported resource guarding concerns combined with his potential for defensive aggression, we feel as though he may be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment. No cats: Bugzy is reported to be aggressive towards cats, for this reason, we advise against a home with cats or smaller animals. Single-Pet/No dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Bugzy has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG BEHAVIOR SUMMARY) in addition to concerns noted in the previous home, we feel that Bugzy should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Bugzy associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Bugzy is reported to growl when disturbed when sleeping, please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression should future concerns arise in a new home environment. Bugzy is reported by his previous owner to snap when his food or toys are approached; in the care center, Bugzy has stiffened when approached with toy items. Please see handout on Resource guarding.
