Animal Profile

Zion

Hello, my name is Zion. My animal id is #76098. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 11 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/26/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Zion is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has warmed up some with staff using treats to build a positive association however do to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

After a few minutes moved tool and Zion hard swatted. Ended interaction. 6/1/24 Vol. Zion was inside his den, growling as the door was opened. I continued to sweet talk him, then extended the tool with the treat. He swatted hard. 6.4.24 FB04 Hissed and spat when staff initially approached kennel. Offered food, soft-talked and Zion chose to go to the other side of his double and wait for staff to put his food in. 6/6/24 FB26 Resting inside his litter box upon approach. Alert with eyes wide. Hissing upon approach. When spoken softly to he was curious enough to slowly engage seeking out offered treats by the front. He was huffing and puffing throughout the assessment. Wary with his surroundings while scanning the room. He will continue to hiss but while eating he briefly allows petting with the scratcher tool along his head. Seems conflicted. 6/8/24 Vol. Inside den box when approached & opened door. Soon after, stuck his head out of den. A bunch of sneezes. Offered dry treats & squeeze up on scratcher. When placing offered treats inside his kennel, he went to eat. While eating, he allows brief pets along his head after slowly opening the kennel door. Kept the interaction short to record the progress.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zion was inside his den upon approach. After lifting up den cover for a visual he began to growl alert with eyes wide, pupils dilated. Ears erect and forward. When attempting to pet with the scratcher tool through the side portal door, he quickly swatted and lunged in place moving the den forward. Zion is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
