BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to a low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children. No Cats: Due to hard barking, growling, lunging, snapping, and biting dogs we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, growling, lunging, snapping, and biting dogs we recommend a single-pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: La Vaca's previous owner states that she has destructive behavior in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that La Vaca will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Handling Sensitivity: La Vaca's previous owner states that she will become fearful when restrained, when pushed off furniture, and when her collar is grabbed. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach La Vaca to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: La Vaca's previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises. During her medical exam she was observed to attempt to run away with pinned ears and tucked tail. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. La Vaca would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: La Vaca's previous owner states that she will lunge, snap, and attempt to bite cats, small animals, and dogs while on leash. During her stay in care La Vaca has been obsvered to fixate on other dogs. La Vaca will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: La Vaca's previous owner states that she pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: La Vaca was observed to quickly become over aroused and begin jumping up on handlers persistently, and pawing at them. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach La Vaca to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
