Baxter
Hello, my name is Baxter. My animal id is #220967. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/21/2025.
Baxter is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Baxter has been social with handlers during his stay at the care center. Engaging in leash biting at times but easily redirected with treats. However, he has begun to deteriorate, spinning and jumping high in his kennel and kennel fighting. Medically, Baxter has an aural hematoma and chronic otitis.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Summary (6):: 3/29/25: Baxter is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down. He is leashed with a treat pulls hard out of the kennel. He goes straight for a nearby toy bin, handler calls him away. They head into elevator, Baxter paces around handler and treats are scattered and he pulls moderately to mild outside, Baxter is aloof with handler. He walks alongside handler pulling mildly and panting. Baxter relieves himself. He ignores dogs that pass him. Baxter runs into two other dogs and stares at them with tense body, handler quickly walks in the opposite direction and Baxter does not react. Baxter is walked back to the shelter where he begins pulling hard. At his kennel treats are tossed when returning to kennel and the leash removed with no issue. 3/27/25: ACS report that Baxter is jumping up high in kennel, his head is reaching above the kennel door. 3/26/25: ACS report that Baxter attempted to mouth their hand when he was returned to kennel. 3/22/25: Baxter is jumping and pushing himself off the wall repeatedly. As handler unlocks the kennel door, he is sitting at the front wagging his tail. He is leashed using a treat as a lure. Once out, he pulls back towards the neighboring kennel, turns to handler and jumps up. Handler tosses a treat and he goes towards the treats. He turns to handler again bumping the dangling poop bag holder with his nose. He takes treats gently from her hand. Baxter is walked on the street where he walks ahead of handler, exploring the environment. He will come to handler when called but does not seek attention on his own accord. When returning to kennel, Baxter pulls to the other dogs kennel but handler muscles him into his kennel. He spins quickly and pushes out of the kennel. Handler muscles him back into kennel and he bites at the leash a few times but will stop for treats. 3/18/25- A volunteer reported when returning a dog into the room as observed Baxter spinning in his kennel and hard barking when.

He ignores the treats offered by handler and continues to jump up at the door as the leash is introduced. Baxter is successfully leashed and taken to the street for his walk. While outside Baxter pulls moderately and walks past people on the street without issue. Baxter will also ignore dogs he sees from a far distance ahead, he continues to ignore treats tossed to him but will stop occasionally to use the bathroom or to simply sniff around. Baxter will stop walking when handler stops and takes breaks as his pulling begins to cause him to reverse sneeze. When standing with handler Baxter allows them to pet him gently across the back. He is brought back to the building after a while and clipped without issue. When returning Baxter to kennel he grabs handlers leash and pulls it into kennel. Handler completely releases the leash and allows Baxter to bring it into kennel and uses a hook to remove the leash shortly after. Interaction is ended shortly after. 2/23/25-ACS reported when returning Baxter to kennel he grabbed the leash as it was being removed tugging into kennel. Handler let Baxter have the leash and retrieved with a hook. 2/23/25: Baxter is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats before attempting to leash, he accepts them softly but loses focus when leashing. He focuses on the leash but allows it to be secured without issue. He pulls hard out of kennel and is taken to the street for his walk, during which he continues pulling hard and uses the bathroom as soon as he reaches the street. He stops to sniff frequently and walks past people on the street without issue. Baxter sees multiple dogs on the street and shows no reaction to them. He is brought inside shortly after his walk to be assessed, during his assessment he allows collaring and petting while distracted with treats. Baxter is very energetic, he jumps on handlers frequently and is observed to counter surf at times. He is brought back to kennel and enters without issue, he begins biting the leash and tugging it as the leash is removed. Handler drops the leash and Baxter does the same, a hook is used to remove the leash from his kennel. Interaction is ended shortly after.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: We have no history on Baxter so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Baxter has been observed to become tense with a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Baxter's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Baxter has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Leash Biting: During his stay in the care center Baxter has been observed to turn and mouth the leash when handlers are returning him to kennel. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
