Animal Profile

Max

Hello, my name is Max. My animal id is #255957. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 6/6/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Max is on the at risk list for medical reasons. Max is a geriatric dog with comorbidities. Most significantly, his bloodwork is suggestive of hypothyroidism and he has weakness and neurologic deficits in his hindlimbs. With placement, Max will need either palliative care or further veterinary care including diagnostics and long-term treatment plan. Behaviorally, Max has been timid but has allowed most handling and is food motivated.

Affectionate and social, Max enjoys companionship and can often be found relaxing nearby or soaking up attention from his favorite humans. Max enjoys spending time outdoors, especially lounging in the yard and taking in the sights and smells around him. When it's time for a ride, Max is ready to go-he loves car rides and would be thrilled to join you on your next adventure. Max is comfortable with bathing and brushing, knows the cues "sit" and "stay," and has earned praise from his previous owner for being both friendly and full of enthusiasm. He has been reported to be friendly and outgoing when meeting unfamiliar dogs on leash. While he has no known experience with familiar dogs or off-leash dog interactions, he has also been described as friendly and outgoing around cats and other animals. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I have lived with cats in my previous home.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 06/08/26(Dog to Dog note): Max is laying down in the back of his kennel and slowly gets up to approach the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard to meet a female playmate. Max approaches the gate for a nose to nose greeting and begins wagging his tail as he sniffs his playmate. After the interaction is completed, Max is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog to Dog Assessment.
