Rambo is a 2-year-old, large black-and-white pup with a playful personality and lots of love to give. He's an energetic, social boy who enjoys playtime, walks, and spending time with his people. His former family lovingly described him as a "playful baby," and that fun-loving side shines through. Rambo has lived in a home with adults, children, a small dog, and a cat. He's playful with people and familiar pets, fully house-trained, and knows basic cues like sit and lay. He enjoys 1-2 daily walks and walks with mild to moderate pulling. He is tolerant of handling and does well with routine care. Rambo can be reactive toward large, unfamiliar dogs while on leash and would benefit from continued training and confident handling. He is best suited for a home that can provide structure, supervision, and positive reinforcement to help him succeed. This sweet, high-energy boy is looking for a person who understands his needs and is ready to help him continue growing into the best companion he can be. With guidance, exercise, and love, Rambo has so much potential to thrive in the right home.

Date of assessment:: 1/18/2026

Summary:: Rambo has been obsvered to be highly fearful noted to have a tense body and show whale eye. When handlers attempt to leash Rambo he escalates to jumping up and snapping at the leash. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety and the reported bite in his previous home. Rambo is not a candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary (4):: 1/22/26: Rambo Bambo is lying down at the front of his kennel and then stands with a slightly tense body. As the handler leashes him, Rambo alert barks and snaps at the leash. After a few attempts, the handler is able to leash him. As the handler opens the kennel door, Rambo stands at the front looking at both kennels next to him. He then barks and growls towards the kennel on his left. With gentle leash pressure, Rambo comes out the kennel and eats the food on the ground while waking out. On the street, Rambo walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension. He looks across the street, although there aren’t any present stimuli. He relieves himself. Upon entry, the handler attempts to clips the leash, Rambo backs away from them. The handler tries once more, but he stands away from them. The handler returns Rambo to kennel with a unclipped leash. As they use the hook to remove the leash, Rambo snaps at the hook. After a few tries, the handler removes the leash.

Summary (5):: 1/21/26: Rambo Bambo is laying near the front of his kennel. He stands and moves towards the back as handler unlocks the kennel and presents the leash. He is not interested in treats. He will becomes loose with wagging tail and approach the front when handler speaks to him in a high pitched excited voice but then retreats when leash presented, becoming neutral. When handler attempts to leash him, he steps back barks and becomes tense. When leash is removed, he will come closer to the front neutral body. He sniffs a toy squeaked but moves away, barking when leashing is attempted. This is repeated many times before a leash can be secured. Once it is the door is opened wide and Rambo sticks his head out but does not readily step out. Slight pressure is placed on the leash to get him out. He growls as he passes the other dog and is then walked to the street. He remains tense and hypervigilant. He ducks away when clipping is attempted but can be successfully clipped with a slow approach.

Summary (6):: 1/20/26:Rambo Bambo is at the middle of the kennel lying down with whale eyes, he will not approach the front. Handler offers treats and spray cheese and he does not eat them. When handler presents the leash, he dodges it. Rambo begins barking and lip curls slightly. When the leash is lassoed onto him he will flip his head and bare teeth. Handler is able to get the leash on him successfully. The kennel door is open and he hesitates to exit. Handler can feel Rambo growling under the leash as he is looking at the dogs in the neighboring kennels. With gentle leash pressure, Rambo is taken out of kennel. He is brought to the street where he relieves himself and walks next to the handler with a neutral body. He is continuously sniffing the ground. Rambo is returned to the shelter and crouches, avoiding the handler when trying to pre-clip him. Rambo is quickly clipped when looking away. He will growl at dogs in kennel when outside of the room. As he is walked inside, Rambo growls at dogs and makes an attempt to pull towards them when passing the kennels. He is returned to kennel without issue. 1/19/26: Rambo Bambo is at the front of his kennel with a tense body. The handler gives him regular treats, which he shows no interest, but when they give a high value treat, he eats it. As the handler unlocks the kennel and shows the leash, Rambo begins to alert bark. As the handler attempts to leash him, Rambo continues to bark, as well as snap at the leash. The handler then uses a squeaker, which catches his attention; they are the able to leash Rambo. They show him a toy, which he sniffs, but has no interest. As they open the kennel door for him to exit, Rambo stays there; he also starts to growl. After coaxing with a soft voice and squeaker, Rambo exits the kennel; he growls and slightly pulls towards the kennels while walking out the room. On the street, Rambo walks ahead with mild leash tension. As a cat meows across the street, Rambo turns his head in the direction, but doesn't pull towards. Rambo also has no interest in passersby. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Rambo into the room. Rambo growls at the kennels as he walks in, but enters his kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 1/18/26: Rambo is at the front of the kennel with a tense body and showing whale eyes. The handler offers treats and Rambo is not receptive. The handler tosses treats into kennel and Rambo continues to be unreceptive. The handler unlocks the kennel and Rambo begins alert barking at them while showing whale eyes. The handler goes to leash Rambo and he jumps up and snaps at the leash. The handler is easily able to lasso Rambo. When they open the kennel door Rambo approaches the front of the kennel with a tense body and whale eyes. The handler is able to coax Rambo out of kennel using squeaky sounds. Once out of kennel Rambo begins pulling towards the other dogs in the kennel room while growling. The handler has to straight arm him to keep him away. While in the street Rambo maintains a tense body but does not react to people. He quickly relieves himself and is easily returned to the building. The handler is able to clip their leash. When returning to kennel Rambo kicks off the wall, while barking and growling towards the other dogs. The handler has use two hands to keep Rambo close to the wall. He is then muscled into kennel. 01/16/26: Rambo Bambo is laying at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and he takes them gently, handler unlocks the kennel door and Rambo stands and begins alert barking toward handler. Once the leash is introduced into kennel Rambo steps back and continues to alert bark, handler then kneels down and begins tossing treats into kennel which Rambo begins taking more hesitantly. Handler waits a bit for Rambo to settle but he remains in the back of kennel barking at handler. Handler produces a pole leash to more easily reach into kennel to leash him and Rambo begins visibly more intense with his barking and becomes more defensive. Rambo snaps a few times at the leash and yelps slightly when the leash eventually secures around his neck. Once the leash is secured Rambo remains in the back of kennel staring forward at handler. Handler waits a moment before calling to Rambo while moving forward, Rambo quickly walks forward to the front of kennel and investigates momentarily before following handler out the room and slowly down the hall. He stares at staff passing by in the hallway and reaches the yard, outside he remains tense and pulls hard initially but begins pulling less as the walk progresses. He explores the perimeter of the yard as well as the inside of the play yards and relieves himself outside. He does not accept treats during his walk and is aloof with handler. After walking for a while he is brought back inside after handler carefully clips his leash. He begins alert barking at dogs in the passing rooms an also reacts to the dogs he passes returning to kennel.

Date of intake:: 1/15/2026

Summary:: Very exuberant, jumping on handler, fearful walking down the hall, muscled into kennel

Date of initial:: 1/18/2026

Summary:: Bared teeth when leash introduced. Retreated to back of kennel. Sedated for thorough exam.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Rambo is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Rambo.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history and fearful behavior while in care, we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity and kennel reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Rambo has been obsvered to hard bark, growl, bare teeth and snap at the leash when the handler attempts to leash him. It is important to move slowly with Rambo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Rambo's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards other dogs. While in care, Rambo has been obsvered to growl, vocalizing, pull towards, and kick off the wall attempting to cage fight with the neighboring dogs. Rambo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
