What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am looking for a home with a patient person. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Shadow Puppet is a really sweet dog. He was slightly anxious and timid when we first started walking, which resulted in some leash pulling but once we were able to build trust (with lots of treats) he was well behaved on the leash, was curious about his surroundings, and became very affectionate. When we took breaks on our walk, he always wanted to be touching and took a nap resting his head in my lap. Once he warmed up to me, he had a very goofy personality and loved getting belly rubs. It was lovely hanging out with Shadow Puppet for the day. If he has the space to build his confidence, he would make a great companion.

Summary:: 4/1/25: Shadow Puppet greets another dog at the gate with a tense body with pinned back ears. His hackles are raised and turns away slowly and does not reapproach.

Summary (6):: 7/8/25- Shadow Puppet is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body, he is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. He's taken to a pen and sniffs around, he relieves himself. Handler pets his head and his side, he leans into their legs. He gently takes treats from their hand. He goes to the neighboring fence and jumps up, he greets the other dog with a soft body and high wagging tail. He sniffs and licks the the other dog's muzzle. Both dogs disengage on their own and Shadow puppet comes to handler seeking more pets. He jumps up on the bench and looks around, he follows the command to sit and is rewarded. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 7/3/25: Shadow is observed to begin jumping up and barking persistently in kennel when the handler takes dogs out near him. 6/28/25: It is reported by staff that Shadow Puppet jumped up and bit at the lock after being returned to kennel. 6/13/25: Shadow Puppet is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls on the way to the yard. In the yard, he was able to be transferred to a drag lead and he would explore around with a lot of sniffing. He would approach the gate for the next pen to sniff another dog with a tense body and is able to be taken away with no issue. He had no interest in toys or treats. He pulls on the way back to his kennel, and he tries to pull towards another handler inside the building when entering his kennel. 5/30/25: Shadow Puppet is observed to be covered in feces as well as his kennel, including along the sides. 5/23/25:It is reported by staff that Shadow puppet will not walk on the street. 5/11/25: Shadow Puppet is at the front of kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure and taken to the street for a walk. He maintains a neutral, relaxed body only at the beginning of his walk, after he relieves himself he becomes frantic. Despite handlers efforts with leas pressure and coaxing, Shadow Puppet is darting back and forth, pacing, and pulling very hard back to care centers. He is taken to the yard for the rest of his walk. Shadow Puppet is put on a drag leash and after shaking off, he is soft, loose, and wiggly bouncing around the pen. He does not seek attention but leans in for pets and continues to take treats gently. He is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 5/4/25: Shadow Puppet is lying down in kennel neutral bodied. Handler approaches the kennel and Shadow Puppet stands up with a neutral body and slow wagging tail. He is easily leashed and walked out of the room not reacting to the passing kennels. He approaches handler with a neutral body and wagging tail in the elevator. Handler tries to bring him to the street and he immediately lays down in the hallway and does not move forward. When the handler walks towards the backyard Shadow Puppets gets up and follows. He is then taken to the backyard and placed on a drag leash. He walks around the yard with a loose body, sniffing his surroundings. He approaches the handler socially with a soft body. Shadow Puppet places his head on the handlers lap and allows petting on his head, he leans in to the handlers legs before walking away. Shadow Puppet then re-approaches the handler and leans against their legs with their hips, allowing petting there. He then walks away to the pen door and is walked around the perimeter of the yard, stopping and sniffing. Shadow Puppet is then brought back to his kennel and walks in without issue. He then begins settling down with enrichment item afterwards. 4/28/25: Volunteer reported that Shadow Puppet is social with them but presents fearful on the street. 04/26/25: Shadow Puppet is near the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and exits quickly. Shadow is taken out to the street for his walk, once outside he begins sniffing vigorously around the general area. He pulls hard toward spots he is curious of but otherwise walks near handler on a loose leash. Shadow Puppet stares at people from across the street that are making noise or speaking loudly and will continue walking after they pass. He begins attempting to turn and pull hard back in the direction of the shelter. His pulling and walking in general becomes frantic. Handler continues walking, stopping walking when Shadow turns and attempts to pull backward. After a moment Shadow continues walking forward, this behavior is repeated for the majority of the rest of the walk but he eventually completes his walk down the street and back. When walking back to the care center he pulls hard. Shadow is brought back to his crate and returns without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shadow Puppet so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Shadow has been observed to be fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to be reluctant to approach handlers. During intake Shadow was observed to escalate to thrashing on leash. It is important to always go slow and give Shadow the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Shadow would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
